I. Job Summary

This corporate level position provides employee and senior executive internal communications counsel, strategic direction and oversight of the company's internal communications needs. The Sr Director, Communications will be expected to establish and actively execute on an integrated, strategic internal communications program that aligns with business objectives and priorities, as well as generating employee awareness and engagement and those business priorities.

II. Duties and Responsibilities include the following. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Other minor duties may be assigned.

  • Develop, lead and execute on internal organizational, change management and employee communication programs to engage employees and heighten their level of business understanding and engagement with the business in the U.S., Canada, and India

  • Oversee the creation and delivery of all internal print, web and video communications materials (e-mails, newsletters, etc.), as well as leadership internal communications, speeches and talking points in support of business and functional objectives. The Director will be a key liaison and partner to senior leaders (including members of the company's senior leadership team) for internal communications needs

  • Work in collaboration with field communications leads to drive effective internal communications in support of market area business needs.

  • Manage Waste Management's intranet strategy and content (corporate needs as well as U.S. and Canadian businesses.)

  • Serve as key internal communications lead and strategist for the internal alignment effort

  • Coordinate large-scale meeting planning, including quarterly Town Hall meetings, ensuring senior executives are fully prepared and that meeting content/key messages is broadly communicated, as appropriate, to multiple employee groups

  • Develop robust metrics around internal communications efforts

III. Supervisory Responsibilities

Oversight of multiple senior manager/manager positions.

IV. Qualifications

The requirements listed below are representative of the qualifications necessary to perform the job

A. Education and Experience

Education: Bachelor's degree (accredited), or in lieu of degree, High School Diploma or GED (accredited) and 4 years of relevant work experience

Experience Required:

  • 10 years of progressive experience in communications or public affairs related positions.

  • Experience forging solid relationships at multiple levels of an organization and across cultures (10 years)

  • In-depth knowledge and experience developing strong, clear and measurable internal communications strategies, goals and plans that are aligned with those of the business (7 years)

  • Experience managing agencies, consultants and budgets (7 years)

  • Experience writing executive speeches and developing presentations (7 years)

  • Experience building, developing and managing effective, motivated and successful teams (7 years)

Experience Preferred

  • Experience with driving internal communications for employees in the USA and Canada (5-7 years)

Other Knowledge, Skills or Abilities Required

  • Strong written and oral communication skills

  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and to translate strategy into action - especially with internal audiences

  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team, but also be a self -starter with the ability to work independently and with minimal supervision

  • Strong leadership competencies, specifically in terms of influence management, effectively gaining consensus for new approaches, managing through ambiguity, ability and willingness to challenge the status quo, and effectively handling multiple stake holders. Strong team-building skills

  • Working knowledge of social media and other new media technologies

  • Ability to prioritize requests and leverage communications resources in a matrixed environment for business requests

Travel Requirements

  • Position requires 15-25% travel in the U.S. and Canada
