JOB SUMMARY

Plans, directs, and supervises all operations and patient care activities in the Emergency Department. Provides direct patient care as a clinician when needed.

Works with staff, physicians, and nursing leadership to ensure patient care needs are met. Responsible for all management duties, to include budget formulation and management, ensures regulatory compliance, quality management, employee management and staffing within the department. Reports to Director of Nursing. Exempt position.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Performs all duties as an RN within the Registered Nurse scope of practice. Required to staff as an RN when needed.

Responsible for overall employee management of the department. Interviews, hires, trains, establishes performance expectations, provides feedback through performance reviews, promotes staff development activities, utilizes performance improvement or disciplinary procedures when corrective action is needed, and ensures hospital policies and procedures are complied with.

Maintains patient and employee customer service relations by ensuring all customer service initiatives are rolled out effectively and used consistently.

Responsible for leading, monitoring, participating in, and complying with all performance improvement activities within the departments. Successfully delivers results for goals and performance.

Identifies strategic goals and anticipates future demands, opportunities and constraints.

Monitors, reviews, and keeps all department policies and procedures current with regulations and industry standards.

Responsible for ensuring compliance of all contracts within the department.

Maintains membership on committees as needed. Expected to participate and/or lead committees or subcommittees as needed to accomplish short or long term goals or projects.

Responsible for accurate completion of personnel timecards and ensures employee pay is accurate and in accordance with FLSA guidelines.

Reconcile department patient charges.

Serves as advocate and liaison for nursing staff.

Verifies availability of all supplies required for correct operation of the department. Over sees that supplies are obtained per PAR levels.

Directs all safety measures to prevent accidents, harm or injury in any way to patient, staff or equipment.

Review and monitor medication discrepancies along with verifying that narcotics & controlled substances are inventoried weekly as per hospital policy.

Ensure licensed personnel practice within their scope of practice.

Performs duties as house supervisor as needed.

Demonstrates ability to assist physicians with procedures as needed, personally or through provision of qualified staff.

Verifies that narcotics and controlled substances are inventoried weekly, per hospital policy.

Participates in patient care conferences as needed.

Provides orientation for new staff members.

Completes other duties as assigned by the Director of Nursing, within the Board of Registered Nurses scope of nursing practice.

Responsible for department staffing and management.

Responsible for financial management of department, including staffing, revenue, and expenses.

Ensures all areas of compliance in department.

Directs day-to-day operations and activities of department.

Responsible for maintaining regulations as mandated to retain the hospital's Level IV Trauma Designation.

Responsible for monitoring ED physicians to ensure designated benchmarks are acceptable.

Monitors all transfers from UMH to ensure compliance with Medcom protocols and EMTALA regulations.

Directs actions towards supervision of nursing care given to neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients presenting in the Emergency Department, according to nursing principles.

Assists with community education regarding injury and prevention.

Attends at least 75% of STRAC meetings as a UMH representative as Trauma Coordinator and Injury Prevention.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Education

Current Texas RN license required.

Current BLS and ACLS Certification for Healthcare Providers, PALS and ENPC certification, and TNCC certification required.

3 years' experience in critical care nursing required.

Bachelors of Science in Nursing preferred.

PALS certification or ENPC certification and TNCC certification required within 6 months.

CCRN, CEN, or Certified Trauma Coordinator, Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) and STABLE certification preferred.

Three years of clinical experience and minimum of 5 years progressive management experience required.

Required Skills

Must possess superior ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing. Additional languages preferred.

Excellent interpersonal skills and customer service.

Must possess high degree of organization and be able to multi-task efficiently and effectively.

Advanced computer knowledge required, including proficiency in Microsoft Office and Outlook.

FUNCTIONAL DEMANDS

Functional Job Requirements:

Job requirements include, but are not limited to: sitting, standing, walking, kneeling, bending, squatting and reaching. Requires good finger dexterity, repetitive motions with hands and fingers.

Requires ability to have good vision and hearing. Pushing and pulling equipment may be necessary.

Job requires heavy lifting on an occasional basis.
