DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:

Under the direction of the Associate or Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services is responsible for directing the District's instructional programs at the pre-kindergarten and elementary level and for providing leadership in the ongoing development and improvement of curriculum and instruction in the District.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

Plans, organizes and directs the District's curriculum and instruction design and development programs, instructional delivery systems, strategies and techniques for achieving optimal educational and instructional results.

Provides leadership and coordination for all schools and departments in the development, revision and implementation of the district's pre-kindergarten, child care, and elementary instructional programs.

Maintains an updated, current working knowledge of laws, regulations, District policies and goals related to curriculum and instruction.

Assists in the development and formulation of District policy, goals and objectives as related to curriculum and instruction.

Provides direction and supervision for curriculum, instruction and staff development for pre-kindergarten, elementary.

Directs the District's music teacher program, elementary visual and performing arts program, and the District-wide celebrations and related programs.

Provides input in the selection of textbooks, instructional media and materials for curriculum and instructional programs.

Supervises and directs the District's Gifted and Talented Education (GATE), Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment (BTSA), Peer Assistance and Review (PAR), and teacher intern programs.

Works collaboratively with the Coordinator of Teacher Support to supervise and direct the design, coordination and evaluation of the District's teacher support programs.

Works closely with the Coordinator of Teacher Support in the selection, supervision, and evaluation of the effectiveness of the District's support providers for BTSA, consulting and support teachers for PAR, and buddy teachers for the District's intern teacher programs

Works collaboratively with the Director of Secondary Curriculum and Instruction, Director of Assessment and Evaluation and Director of Professional Development to assure coordination, alignment and articulation of the District curriculum, instructional, assessment and professional development programs.

Works collaboratively with the other Educational Services directors in the design, coordination and implementation of technologically supported learning programs and staff development programs.

Works closely with other Educational Services directors and early childhood education to ensure that the curriculum, instructional programs and professional development programs are designed and implemented to meet the needs of the diverse student population of the District.

Works closely with the Human Resources Division to ensure that the No Child Left Behind requirements for highly qualified teachers and administrators are met.

Assists the Associate or Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services in the design and implementation of the monthly administrator academies.

Works collaboratively with other Educational Services directors to coordinate the District summer school and intervention programs.

Works collaboratively with the Director of Secondary Curriculum and Instruction and Director of Assessment and Evaluation to assist the Associate or Assistant Superintendent, Educational Services in the development and maintenance of a system of multiple measures of student performance which provides evidence useful to the evaluation and modification of educational programs.

Works closely with the Director of Technology and the Director of Secondary Curriculum and Instruction and the Director of Assessment and Evaluation to design and monitor online assessments of student performance.

Works collaboratively with the Director of Secondary Curriculum and Instruction to prepare the budget for curriculum and instruction.

Prepares the budgets for GATE, BTSA, PAR, TITLE II- PART A, teacher intern programs.

Works closely with the Director of Program Improvement and the Director of Secondary Curriculum and Instruction and Director of Assessment and Evaluation to provide guidance and assistance with the process of Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) accreditation, school improvement programs, and Categorical Program Monitoring (CPM) as needed.

Establishes agendas, provides leadership, support and guidance to District personnel in conducting the business of the District.

Provides leadership and expertise in forming, guiding, and counseling District committees, groups, councils, and advisories for curriculum and instruction.

Represents the District in meetings and conferences appropriate to curriculum and instruction.

Represents the District as a liaison in meetings with county/state/federal agencies, institutions and committees that are related to curriculum and instruction.

Provides leadership, support, and guidance to staff, District personnel, and members of the community to ensure thorough communication relative to the educational design and delivery process. Also ensures that community advisory groups have the opportunity to participate in the processes of assessment and evaluation of educational programs.

Supervises and evaluates certificated and classified personnel as assigned.

Assists the Associate or Assistant Superintendent, Educational Services as requested in all duties and responsibilities related to curriculum, instruction and staff development.

CREDENTIAL: A valid California Administrative Services credential and elementary teaching credential.

EDUCATION: Master's Degree or higher in Educational Administration Desirable. Coursework in curriculum development and design is desirable.

EXPERIENCE: Five years of successful teaching experience at the elementary or secondary level and completion of educational administrative training program.

Four years of experience in a responsible administrative position performing instructional support services and related functions in a unified school district.

SUPERVISION: Accountable to the Associate or Assistant Superintendent, Educational Services.
