A Little About Us

Oath, a subsidiary of Verizon, is a values-led company committed to building brands people love. We reach over one billion people around the world with a dynamic house of 50+ media and technology brands. A global leader in digital and mobile, Oath is shaping the future of media.

A Little About the Role

As the Director of the Design System team, you will have the unique opportunity to influence the product direction for Oath's Advertising and Publishing products and services. You will blend world class visual design with classic interaction design principles to support the goal of empowering our teams to efficiently create beautiful products that work well.

You and the team will craft, standardize, and champion a repeatable and scalable set of components that will be adopted by multiple product design teams. The role will require you to be a passionate collaborator who focuses on designing solutions that our users love and defining processes and tools that empower our designers. Moreover, you will have ample opportunity to practice and grow your strategic thinking skills as you create a roadmap for the unification of the design system for more than 15 unique products, which span multiple product lines with multiple design, product, and engineering teams.

The role will be a hands-on, servant leader who can elevate a small team of talented visual and interaction designers while also contributing designs to the system. You will work closely with a highly collaborative team of product designers, user researchers, product managers, marketers, technologists, and business leaders to bring ideas to life. Moreover, you will help to mentor/coach the design team to grow their skills and take our products to the next level. This role can be based in San Francisco, Sunnyvale, or New York City with occasional travel between different offices in the US and internationally.

Responsibilities Include

  • Design, build, and maintain our library of shared components. Establish and refine processes for growing and maturing the library. Maintain the symbol library used for various design tools.

  • Define the short term and long term vision for the design system. Create quarterly objectives and define key results (OKRs) for the team. Drive the long term vision by defining a roadmap and implementation/adoption strategy.

  • Lead innovation with stunning visual designs and effectively communicate them through wireframes, storyboards, user flows, process flows etc. for final hand-off to engineering.

  • Establish and promote design guidelines, best practices, and standards

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams across the company to deliver new and innovative experiences

  • Mentor team members to help raise the bar on our creative thinking and execution

  • Ensure work across the team is of the highest quality and the implemented products accurately reflect the design vision

A Little About You

  • Strong design background and passion for creating beautiful products that work well. You have experience in both the consumer and enterprise space with a particular emphasis on products that feature a lot of interaction--data visualization experience is a plus!

  • Enough professional experience that you thrive in the face of ambiguity and complexity and know how to get things done across a globally distributed environment. You have excellent communication skills across all mediums with the proven ability to influence a diverse set of stakeholders. Your teammates love collaborating with you!

  • Previous experience crafting and growing a design system for complex products across desktop and mobile. Ideally, the system was applied to a diverse set of products and featured multiple releases that demonstrate continual growth and maturity of the system.

  • Experience creating a roadmap and driving it to implementation/adoption across multiple teams and products.

  • Solid craftsmanship: skilled in both the theory and practice of design, up-to-date on design patterns, able to differentiate between trends and emerging best practices, comfortable with a range of prototyping tools (e.g., InVision and Framer), familiar with user research methods, and a firm understanding of user-centered design and when to apply different tools and processes to achieve a great outcome.

  • You are passionate and enthusiastic about leadership and the impact servant leaders can have on a designers career. You have experience leading teams for multiple years and have coached high performing, high impact designers to success.
