Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

Carolina Public Humanities (CPH) is the public outreach arm of the College of Arts and Sciences. CPH organizes public programs on humanities-related themes for lifelong learners, runs teacher outreach activities through our subsidiary Carolina K12, and builds partnerships with community colleges around North Carolina. Our mission is to bring scholarship and faculty from UNC-CH to various communities throughout the state including public audiences, K12 teachers, alumni, civic leaders and community college students and faculty. We help fulfill the broader university mission of being 'of the public and for the public' and contribute humanistic knowledge and perspectives that help make the UNC the University for North Carolina.

Position Summary

The Director of Carolina K-12 at Carolina Public Humanities, UNC-Chapel Hill, is responsible for providing overall leadership and strategic vision for Carolina K-12, while also evangelizing the mission of Carolina K-12 at state conferences and events, as well as among donors and board members. This role involves developing and implementing high-quality professional development programs and education initiatives that serve K-12 teachers in all 100 counties, ensuring programming is responsive and relevant to teacher-identified needs, while also promoting the value of history and the humanities in K-12 education. The Director maximizes the impact of Carolina K-12's small staff by fostering and maintaining partnerships and collaborations within and external to the University System, as well as by securing grants and contracts.

The Director of Carolina K-12 will play a vital role in advancing the mission of Carolina Public Humanities and UNC-CH by enhancing professional opportunities for educators across the state and will have a meaningful impact on K-12 education in providing support and showing appreciation for our state's teachers.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent educational or instructional activities relevant to the teaching assignment, will accept a relevant Bachelor's degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. In addition, the position minimums should satisfy any accreditation requirements in the specified area of instruction.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • Full-time teaching experience in a K-12 classroom.

  • Bachelor of Arts degree in humanities, education, or a related field.

  • Expert public speaking and communication skills, with the ability to articulate the mission and goals of Carolina K-12 to diverse stakeholders.

  • Excellent teaching and facilitation skills.

  • Excellent writing skills, with demonstrated experience in K-12 lesson plan creation

  • Detail-oriented, with exemplary project management skills and the ability to multi-task.

  • Creative thinker and self-starter who works well independently as well as part of a collaborative team

  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively communicate with diverse stakeholders from all regions of the state (i.e., faculty, K-12 educators, community partners, board members and donors, etc.)

  • Must demonstrate a passion for and commitment to promoting the value of history and the humanities in K-12 education.

  • Valid driver's license; approximately 15% travel around the state will be required throughout the year

  • While some remote work will be possible, candidates must live in or be willing to relocate to the vicinity of UNC-CH.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • Five or more years of teaching experience in a K-12 classroom

  • Knowledge of North Carolina education standards and curriculum frameworks.
