POSITION SUMMARY
The Director of Business Development will be a key member of Terns' business development team and will report to the Chief Business Officer. The role will span multiple functions, including exploring and executing business development opportunities for existing programs and R&D collaborations, providing commercial input to discovery and development teams, and supporting and executing strategic branding and communications initiatives that are aligned with corporate goals. The Director role offers a unique opportunity to be a major contributor to the success of a well-positioned growth-stage biopharmaceutical company that treats a range of diseases, including oncology and metabolic diseases.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Work closely with business development colleagues and broader cross-functional project team to build enterprise value through the execution of strategic alliances and licensing transactions
Stay abreast of new developments in key therapeutic areas; synthesize and share findings and recommendations with leadership team
Establish strong working relationships with cross-functional stakeholders from research, program management, manufacturing, clinical, commercial, legal and finance
Develop and maintain solid external relationships to drive effective management of business development campaigns, including in-licensing and out-licensing processes, due diligence and contracting
Lead business development workstreams, including technical/scientific assessments, analysis of the competitive landscape, and financial modeling, assuming ownership and accountability for operational execution
Drive commercial assessments, revenue forecasts and planning for internal programs and external asset opportunities for priority diseases as identified in collaboration with clinical, scientific and business leadership
Define target product profiles in partnership with cross-functional team members based upon in-depth reviews of unmet needs for target indications, treatment pathway(s), market size, patient segmentation, competitive and payer landscapes utilizing market research and key data sources
Serve as a business representative on multiple program strategy and cross-functional project teams to frame and assess development options, risk, and key decision points
Support and execute on strategic branding and communication plans covering key corporate events, clinical and scientific advancements in support of corporate objectives
Conduct detailed financial analysis, including NPV, ROI, and risk assessments, to support decision-making processes

Strong analytical and financial modeling skills with proven ability to frame and solve complex problems; advanced Excel expertise required
Expert PowerPoint slide development skills, with proven ability to frame and solve complex problems and clear ability to effectively communicate strategy, conclusions and recommendations to executive teams and broader audiences
Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with key stakeholders, develop and build strong working relationships
High focus, commitment and engagement to effectively collaborate across multiple time zones
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment, working collaboratively as well as independently and under minimal supervision
REQUIREMENTS
Education
BA/BS in Science, Engineering, Finance, or Business
PhD or MBA preferred
Experience
8+ years of experience in therapeutics business development, banking, or management consulting in the biotech/pharmaceutical sectors
Expert knowledge of the pharmaceutical/biotech landscape, R&D trends, and market opportunities in major disease areas with significant experience in strategic roles
Strong background in conducting and managing due diligence, including technical, scientific, and commercial assessments, to support corporate and business development initiatives
Solid experience in market analysis, including competitive landscape assessment and identification of market opportunities for new and existing products
Experience leading a matrixed cross-functional team, including representatives from R&D, commercial, legal, and finance teams
The expected base pay for this full-time position is $210K to $245K + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
