The Director of Business Data Science & Analytics will be focused on growing units, revenue and margin through leveraging data and scientific strategies, applied across our Growth Businesses and Partnerships, as well as the operations of Client Services, Marketing, and Sales.

Your impact

  • Growth margin across AppFolio with best in class operations and data utilization across all major functions, to help prioritize and evaluate success of key business initiatives.

  • Evolve the overall business performance reporting to be maintained at scale, maintaining timeliness, accuracy, and trustworthiness.

  • Explore efficiency opportunities in operations via the introduction of data science backed utilities and auto-decisioning.

  • Minimize risk/loss/churn exposure by ensuring anomalous usage activities in our product are automatically escalated to manual reviewers, for resolution.

  • Drive high revenue growth across our Growth Businesses by partnering with business leaders and our Product DS&A team on product/service changes.

  • Establish and prioritize business data science and analytics initiatives based on impact, urgency, and in alignment with overall business and strategic goals.

  • Use Financial Services expertise to evolve/refine metric-set and revenue scenario modeling + forecasting models across Growth businesses, to inform business decision-making in a clear and timely manner.

  • Partner with Product Data Science & Analytics to execute product/pricing experimentation and exploratory opportunity analyses to identify and deliver on optimized revenue outcomes.

  • Successfully manage and develop Business Data Science & Analytics talent, for success in scaling long-term with planned business growth.

  • All data scientists and data analysts should work to master the area they support as deeply as their business/product counterparts and are considered invaluable, trusted advisors.

  • Staff should work to master their specialization, exploring the newest techniques/technologies, with investment in existing and new members of the team through training, certifications, mentorship and partnerships.

  • Talent should constantly be performance managed, with new hires brought on as necessary to build towards the overall Data Science & Analytics vision, through a diverse team of A players.

  • Proactively connect leaders towards the common goal of bettering Data Science & Analytics. Leverage uniquely informed perspective to highlight business/customer 'win/win' opportunities to senior leaders across the business to inform and inspire action
  • Advanced Business Acumen: Has a deep understanding of how businesses work and are knowledgeable in SaaS vertical practices, trends and technology. Applies the right financial, customer and product metrics, strategy and market knowledge to make sound business decisions.

  • Hiring & Developing People: Hires the best and understands the value of building a strong team. An inspiring mentor for people managers, building a rock solid leadership bench of culture-carrying top performers who subscribe personally, and hold their teams to high standards of excellence.

  • Innovation & Thought Leadership

  • Generates and brings other's new and creative ideas forward. Follows industry trends and emerging and innovative methods from academia etc. to inspire team and business to operate as 'best in class' in the areas of Analytics & Data Science.
  • Cross Functional Knowledge: Navigates across verticals and functions and understands how each department contributes to our mission. Able to build relationships and quickly establish trust with others to make things happen. Brings teams and people together to accomplish important things.

  • Customer Focus and Advocacy

  • Frames opportunities in the context of customer value and helps the business draw meaningful connections between business initiatives and customer value/impact; relentlessly advocates for improving the customer experience.
  • Communication / Executive Presence: Has authentic communication skills including transparency and clarity in both formal and informal settings including: one-on-one, small and large groups across different levels and departments. Applies exceptional presentation skills to distill complex information into simple concepts & compelling stories.

Must have

  • MS or higher in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics or a related field; or equivalent professional experience.

  • 2+ years in a Director+ role

  • 4+ years of SaaS experience

  • 2+ years of Financial Services experience

  • 5+ years of people management experience

  • 5+ years of work experience in a Data Science / Data Analytics role

  • Strong business acumen and experience in a business setting

  • Strong Tableau, SQL, R (or Python), DBT, github, and Excel skills required

  • Working knowledge of Salesforce required

  • Ability to support, work and communicate with a fast, cross-functional team

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Listening and interpersonal skills; ability to communicate ideas in both technical and business terms

  • Highly self-motivated and directed

  • Proven analytical and creative problem-solving abilities

  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment

Compensation & Benefits

The base salary/hourly wage that we reasonably expect to pay for this role is: $194,000-$250,000

The actual base salary/hourly wage for this role will be determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to: the candidate's skills, education, experience, etc.

Please note that base pay is one important aspect of a compelling Total Rewards package. The base pay range indicated here does not include any additional benefits or bonuses/commissions that you may be eligible for based on your role and/or employment type.
