We are currently looking for a Director, R&T to join Thales in Pasadena, California. As a Director of Biometric R&T you will be leading the development of algorithms, core technology, and intellectual property. You will also advice, guide and drive the strategic direction of our biometric core features and capabilities, as well as its integration into our products and solutions. You will serve as technical subject matter expert to engage Thales cross-functional teams, and customers in addressing business needs. You will be the Biometrics & Public Security and Thales representative in the biometric scientific community in various engagements and execute the missions to evolve our biometric technology and contribute to standards activities, academic collaboration and participation in technology evaluations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • You will lead, guide and mentor the Biometric R&T team's day to day activities and take part in the research/development itself

  • You will define the Technology roadmap in collaboration with key stakeholders and set measurable goals and success criteria

  • You will participate in the Multi Year Budget planning to translate technology initiatives, roadmaps and research directions into budget preparations and proposals

  • You will foster and expand a culture of collaboration and information sharing

  • You will develop and participate in the training activities associated with technology, architectures and transfer acquired knowledge/skills internally

  • You participate in the improvement and evolution of the tools and methods inherent to the field of endeavour and manage our core technology component catalogue

  • You will be responsible for the accuracy & performance of our algorithms and monitor technology and be well informed about competing technologies/products

  • You participate in technology standardization activities and the development of associated products, solution, and/or features.

  • You will actively evolve and manage our Intellectual Property in coordination with corporate IP teams

  • You may participate in pre-sales activities, supporting sales/solution sales and solution management (as needed), on customer presentations, customer demos/benchmark/pilot, and technical reviews with strategic customers

  • You may support the product R&D and Engineering teams, as well as the Solution Management and Service Delivery teams by providing subject matter expertise in the specification of complex biometric solutions and associated technical offer

Required Skills and Experience

  • MSc degree or higher in the field of Engineering or Mathematics with a specialization in biometrics, image/signal processing, detection/classification/estimation or related field/experience.

  • Minimum of 10 years' experience (or equivalent) in below areas:

  • Biometrics, image/signal processing and algorithm development

  • Technology roadmap creation, financial budgeting and tracking

  • Software development, algorithm integration and technology productization

  • Technology innovation and intellectual property creation

  • Technical standards engagement and management

  • Previous managerial experience leading a team of technical individuals

  • Expertise in signal/image processing as well as detection, classification and estimation theories and methods

  • Previous experience in Development Language and Tools such as C, C++ and/or Matlab, DL frameworks (e.g. Caffee, Tourch, Tensorflow)

  • Background working in quality, methodology and tools and experience working with Scientific reporting methods and metrics, and Configuration Management (Mercurial)

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are required

  • Ability to learn quickly new customer's processes and environments

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Phd is preferred

  • Advanced software development languages (Java) and tools

  • Software & Network security

  • Cryptography (Symmetric and asymmetric, PKI, protocols)

  • Contract legal understanding

  • Finance understanding

  • Customer negotiation skills

This individual will manage a team of product managers to work with cross functional teams to manage the full biometric product portfolio including but not limited to Cogent Automated Biometrics Identification System (CABIS), Programmable Matching Accelerator (PMA), Livescan, Mobile ID, etc. by identifying potential market demands; conducting market research; defining product roadmaps; generating product requirements; determining specifications, production timetables, pricing, and plans for product introduction; developing marketing strategies. CABIS is a sophisticated biometrics matching platform with scalability, top speed and high accuracy and can search millions biometrics records in seconds. Working closely with business leadership, you will contribute to the development and evolution of business strategies for the biometric business line. You will define product vision and product strategies for long-term planning & development of the full biometric product portfolio. You will be responsible to execute product strategies and ensure that will not deviate from business strategies. You will also oversee the profit-and-loss of the overall product portfolio and on a product basis, make sound decisions to prune product portfolio, actively guide product sunsetting process, prioritize & allocate resources to introduce new and enhanced technologies and products that secure the digital lives of millions of people. Key Responsibilities: * You will understand and articulate customers' needs and desires based on inputs from a broad range of inputs from customers, sales, marketing, R&D, competition, etc. * You will work with product managers to define product roadmaps with well-documented nature and scope of present and future product lines. * You will work with segment marketers to assess market competition by comparing company's product portfolio to competitors' product portfolio. * You will work with product managers to introduce and market new products by developing plans with R&D, production, supply chain, sales, marketing, finance, etc. * You will work with segment business owners and marketers to develop and implement product marketing strategies and initiatives. * You will provide management team product-focused statistical reports with key financial & operational performance and product-oriented forecasts. * You will review & oversee the engagements with supply chain and factories to optimize inventory turnover and product availability. * You will suggest and review product pricing by utilizing market research data; studying competition offerings; anticipating volume; costing special and customized needs; ongoing maintenance and enhancements, etc. * You will maintain professional and technical knowledge by conferences, workshops, online studies, customer engagements, and professional networking, etc. * You will hire, mentor, grow, and retain product managers and build a strong product management team. * You will oversee daily product management activities and provide regular status reports on product management topics. * You will provide guidance and directions on important presale opportunities and challenges in custom project delivery. * You will monitor and prioritize operational and escalated product issues Required Skills and Experience * Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field. * 10+ years of product experience; product marketing knowledge & experience * 10+ years of experience working in a technology and engineering environment * Previous experience working in a complex organization * This individual will have prior experience collaborating and working with cross functional teams * Previous experience managing or leading a team of individuals * 5+ years of hands-on engineering experience in software, hardware, and solution type of products. * Excellent and effective quantitative and qualitative business analysis skills.
