We are currently looking for a Director, R&T to join Thales in Pasadena, California. As a Director of Biometric R&T you will be leading the development of algorithms, core technology, and intellectual property. You will also advice, guide and drive the strategic direction of our biometric core features and capabilities, as well as its integration into our products and solutions. You will serve as technical subject matter expert to engage Thales cross-functional teams, and customers in addressing business needs. You will be the Biometrics & Public Security and Thales representative in the biometric scientific community in various engagements and execute the missions to evolve our biometric technology and contribute to standards activities, academic collaboration and participation in technology evaluations.
You will lead, guide and mentor the Biometric R&T team's day to day activities and take part in the research/development itself
You will define the Technology roadmap in collaboration with key stakeholders and set measurable goals and success criteria
You will participate in the Multi Year Budget planning to translate technology initiatives, roadmaps and research directions into budget preparations and proposals
You will foster and expand a culture of collaboration and information sharing
You will develop and participate in the training activities associated with technology, architectures and transfer acquired knowledge/skills internally
You participate in the improvement and evolution of the tools and methods inherent to the field of endeavour and manage our core technology component catalogue
You will be responsible for the accuracy & performance of our algorithms and monitor technology and be well informed about competing technologies/products
You participate in technology standardization activities and the development of associated products, solution, and/or features.
You will actively evolve and manage our Intellectual Property in coordination with corporate IP teams
You may participate in pre-sales activities, supporting sales/solution sales and solution management (as needed), on customer presentations, customer demos/benchmark/pilot, and technical reviews with strategic customers
You may support the product R&D and Engineering teams, as well as the Solution Management and Service Delivery teams by providing subject matter expertise in the specification of complex biometric solutions and associated technical offer
Required Skills and Experience
MSc degree or higher in the field of Engineering or Mathematics with a specialization in biometrics, image/signal processing, detection/classification/estimation or related field/experience.
Minimum of 10 years' experience (or equivalent) in below areas:
Biometrics, image/signal processing and algorithm development
Technology roadmap creation, financial budgeting and tracking
Software development, algorithm integration and technology productization
Technology innovation and intellectual property creation
Technical standards engagement and management
Previous managerial experience leading a team of technical individuals
Expertise in signal/image processing as well as detection, classification and estimation theories and methods
Previous experience in Development Language and Tools such as C, C++ and/or Matlab, DL frameworks (e.g. Caffee, Tourch, Tensorflow)
Background working in quality, methodology and tools and experience working with Scientific reporting methods and metrics, and Configuration Management (Mercurial)
Strong written and verbal communication skills are required
Ability to learn quickly new customer's processes and environments

Phd is preferred
Advanced software development languages (Java) and tools
Software & Network security
Cryptography (Symmetric and asymmetric, PKI, protocols)
Contract legal understanding
Customer negotiation skills
