Director, Beard Center on Aging

The University of Lynchburg, a private, regional university in the beautiful foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Central Virginia, is seeking applicants for full-time Director of the Beard Center on Aging in the College of Health Sciences.

This position reports to, is supervised by, and evaluated by the Dean of the College of Health Sciences. Work performance evaluation will be ongoing and carried out by the Dean of the College of Health Sciences. It will include the specific duties and responsibilities of this position description plus employee attitude and general working behavior.

Job Type: 10 month, Full-time, Benefits Eligible

Specific Job Duties:

  • Responsible for fiscal management of the Center's budget, resources, and accounts, including operating within the approved budget, ensuring maximum resource utilization, finding funding opportunities, grant writing, and maintaining a favorable financial position.

  • Plan, organize, and direct the Center's operations and programs while aligning with the University's strategic plan and the Center's mission and values.

  • Responsible for developing collaborative relationships on campus while working closely with other professional, civic, faith, and private organizations to promote community awareness and expand programs, serving as a liaison between these stakeholders, the University, and the Board of Trustees.

  • Oversee marketing and communication efforts.

  • Coordinate special events and activities, including the June Conference on Aging, the Aging in Place Expo, and the Regional 50+ Health Fair, while also providing community and professional education on topics related to gerontology.

  • Provide leadership and support for the local Consortium on Aging, composed of individuals, organizations, non-profits, faith communities, and businesses.

  • Manage the Genworth Aging and Caregiving Resource Center.

  • Work with Heritage Green to coordinate the annual Heritage Green Gerontology Award.

  • Responsible for recruiting, hiring, retaining, and overseeing a diverse staff, including a part-time administrative assistant, work-study students, a graduate assistant, interns, and volunteers.

  • Evaluate program outcomes using data and feedback from stakeholders to make adjustments and improvements as needed.

Required Experience / Skills:

  • Experience in gerontology, nonprofit management, health promotion, or a related field, including having knowledge of older adult resources and services.

  • Demonstrate experience in grant writing and management, fundraising, budgeting, marketing, public relations, and project development.

  • Strong leadership, supervisory, communication, and interpersonal skills, including competent verbal, written, public speaking, and visual communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with staff, Board of Trustees, donors, sponsors, and other stakeholders.

Starting Salary: Salary is commensurate with education and experience

Schedule:

  • 8:30 am
  • 5:00 pm (7.5 hours/day with some evenings and weekends to meet the needs of the department may be required)

  • It may involve some amount of time walking, lifting, standing, and bending.

  • Must be able to carry items up to 10 pounds

Preferred Education:

  • Master's or Doctorate degree in a relevant field (e.g., nonprofit management, gerontology, health sciences, or social work).
