Primary Purpose

The Director of Safety is responsible for the protection and security of all visitors, fans, employees, and assets at Progressive Field and related facilities.

  • Manage and oversee the Safety and Security staffs; administer the recruiting, hiring, training, and supervision of Full- Time, Part-Time, and Game Day staffs.

  • Provide leadership and administrative direction regarding Safety and Security functions at Progressive Field.

  • Lead the safety/security efforts in coordination with the organization's Risk Management Committee.

  • Ensure that service excellence is emphasized through all activities.

  • Establish and maintain appropriate programs, policies, and procedures, to include documentation, training, and quality assurance.

  • Ensure compliance with legal and industry regulations/standards.

  • Act as primary liaison with City, County, State, and Federal public safety/law enforcement.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities


  • Develop appropriate systems to direct, coordinate and supervise all functions and activities at Cleveland Indians facilities related to Safety, Security, and protection of property.

  • Responsible for the development and implementation of policies and procedures in coordination with Cleveland Indians legal counsel for the operation of the Safety and Security aspects at Progressive Field.

  • Responsible for oversight and management of the following groups: 24 Hour Facility Security, Game Day/Event

Security, VIP/Fixed Security, Game Day Off-Duty Police

  • Oversee and coordinate the operations and functions of Event Medical Service (contracted First Aid) and Cleveland Division of Fire inspectors and related activities

  • In collaboration with the Risk Management Committee responsible for development, implementation, and sustainability of the following: Business Continuity Plan, Crisis Recovery Plan, Emergency Response Plan

  • Serve as a member of the Risk Management Committee and Crisis Management Committee to ensure that the company is fulfilling their responsibilities and developing the appropriate policies and procedures to ensure safety for our employees and guests.

  • Responsible for all Risk Management functions of the Cleveland Indians as it relates to employee and customer safety, physical facility, protection of property and other risk related issues relative to injury prevention.

  • Organizational liaison with Finance, Risk Management Committee, Major League Baseball, American Specialties Insurance, and FM Global for inspections, compliance, risk management, etc.

  • Develop strategy for and consult on safety and security for players and uniformed personnel.

  • Consult on safety and security processes for remote training/development operations including Goodyear, AZ, and Dominican Republic.

  • Prepare, manage and evaluate resources and budgets for the Safety Department.

  • Adhere to expense policy guidelines tied to budget and forecast submissions

  • Review, approve, and maintain department operating and capital budgets, expenditures, work orders, and payables.

  • Ensure that service excellence is emphasized through all activities.


  • Work closely with the Sr. Director of Facilities to assure compliance with building codes, safety, OSHA and environmental health requirements.

  • Ensure compliance with all Major League Baseball operational directives at all Cleveland Indians facilities, specifically including Progressive Field and the Player Development Complex in Goodyear, Arizona. These directives will focus on best practices that reduce the risk of employee/customer injury and facility asset losses. conduct internal investigations related to employees and team members of the Cleveland Indians as directed

through Ballpark Operations, Baseball Operations, Human Resources, and the Business Leadership Team.

  • Oversee coordination of dignitary protection for attendees at both Progressive Field and in Goodyear, Arizona.

  • Act as a liaison with Major League Baseball Security Department

  • Act as a liaison with Federal, State, County and local law enforcement, Department of Homeland Security, Cleveland Division of Fire and other municipal government officials.

  • Act as a liaison with Cleveland Indians players and coaches, visiting team players, coaches and personnel and umpires in regard to any safety or security issues which may arise.

  • Develop and oversee a Security Committee comprised of Police, Fire, DHS, FBI, and other agencies, along with appropriate club personnel. The committee will meet prior to the start of the season and regularly through the season to discuss pertinent safety, security and intelligence issues related to the Cleveland Indians and the fans.

  • Review security and staffing plans for all non-baseball events held at Progressive Field. Complete other duties as assigned.


  • Develop and sustain a culture of service excellence, both externally (fan-facing) and internally (among colleagues and teammates)

  • Ensure that all direct reports embrace Service Excellence as a foundational element of their work Partner with the Service Excellence Department on training, new initiatives and ideation sessions

  • Constantly research best practices in and out of sports industry that blend Service Excellence tenets with Safety and Security requirements


  • Supervise Safety and Security activities, including but not limited to, year-round 24/7 facility security, game day and special event security, investigations, and related safety operations.

  • Direct daily activities for Manager of Facility Security, Manager of Event Security, and Manager of Security

  • Operations and their respective year-round, seasonal, and game day staff through subordinate supervisors

  • Oversee (through Management Staff) all activities of staff on a daily and game basis.

  • Maintain reasonable and responsible safety/security staffing levels for all ballpark events.

  • Work with all other Departments in the successful execution of their activities.

  • Manage facility communication with staff through regular staff meetings and briefings.

  • Maintain accurate payroll and personnel records, as directed by Finance and Human Resources.

  • Complete annual performance evaluations for full-time employees.

  • Provide professional development coaching to full-time employees.

  • Oversee counseling, discipline and related Human Resources issues.

  • Ensure staff is adhering to Service Excellence principles and processes.

  • Attend unemployment hearings for union employees, as scheduled by Human Resources.

  • Coordinate and supervise temporary workers when needed through subordinate supervisors.

RequirementsEducation and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice or other related major preferred

  • Minimum 10 years of experience including 5 years of supervisory experience in private security working in facilities management, property management, crowd management, or related area in a mid-size company.

  • 5+ years of supervisory experience in law enforcement/public safety preferred.

  • Experience and knowledge of domestic and international events.

  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills necessary.

  • Focus on providing superior service to fans, customers, and staff.

  • Ability to conduct investigations and provide detailed and accurate reporting.

  • Ability to make independent and sound judgment decisions within established policies and procedures.

  • Experience with developing schedules, budgets and financial management.

  • Mastery of computer skills specifically including Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Power Point and Outlook.

These should include, but not be limited to fault tree analysis, logic trees, risk definition and mitigation analyses, hazard analysis and trending/data search. Assess program or project documentation (e.g., Contractor PWS, Data Requirements Documents, System Requirements Document, Contract End Item (CEI), Requirements Verification Compliance (RVC), procedures) to assure that all applicable safety requirements are addressed. Perform and assess trade studies relative to design, development, operation, or mission events to assure compliance with safety requirements and to assure safety risks are adequately identified, characterized, and mitigated. These tasks shall be performed for in-house and out-of-house design and development projects. Prepare and/or assess Safety Plans to assure compliance with applicable Agency, Center and Program safety requirements. Assess Project Plans to assure that safety is properly considered. These tasks shall be performed for in-house and out-of-house design and development projects. Perform and/or assess hazard analyses to assure that: (a) all hazards are identified and the associated risks properly characterized; (b) hazard controls satisfy applicable safety requirements and adequately mitigate safety risks; (c) safety verification requirements are clearly identified and adequate, including the clear definition of verification pass/fail criteria; and (d) the safety verification status is properly maintained in a closed loop accounting system. These tasks shall be performed for in-house and out-of-house design and development projects. Assess test and operating procedures to assure compliance with safety controls and safety verification requirements. Efforts include: engineering analysis of systems to identify and eliminate safety hazards, integrated hazards analysis, the systematic application of safety policies to the design of NASA human-rated hardware, and assistance in the overall implementation of safety practices for systems/subsystems; Experience performing analyses in accordance with NASA-STD-8719.13B, and NASA-STD-8715.3; Experience in performing complex Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) and Hazard Assessments (HAs) is highly desirable. Required Skills: * BS in Engineering * 5+Years of Experience * Must be a US citizen * Must be able to pass a national agency check * Must be able to pass pre-employment and periodic random drug and alcohol screenings. * A general understanding of NASA Safety and Mission Assurance requirements is needed.
