This Director, Associate General Counsel role will be an integral member of the Employment, Benefits, & Labor Law team who will advise with respect to a variety of internal employee benefits and other legal matters. The role requires a considerable degree of autonomy and self-direction. This position can be in either Charlotte, NC or in Chicago, IL.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Advise and counsel the HR Benefits team on a variety of benefits-related issues impacting our employees., including but not limited to:
Advice related to the design and administration of a variety of qualified and non-qualified retirement and health and welfare benefit plans.
Advice and guidance with regard to compliance with applicable federal and state retirement and benefit laws and regulations, including, ERISA, IRC, HIPAA, COBRA and ACA.
Advise the asset management business regarding ERISA issues.
Advise on fiduciary issues regarding plan operations and investments
Assist with responses to employee benefits inquiries, claims and appeals and regulatory inquiries, as needed.
Assist in the negotiation of benefit plan vendor contracts.
Oversee remediation of operational issues and regulatory reporting on plans
Own the qualified and non-qualified retirement and health and welfare benefit plan documents
Anticipate and address legal issues, including providing legal advice on service, plans, transactions, and regulatory and legislative developments.
Handle moderate to complex transactions and/or matters to advance key business objectives.
Lead and/or participates on project teams for HR or business unit area initiatives.
Present effectively to senior levels of management. May engage in external industry activity, including leadership, speaking engagements or committee work.
Work directly with outside counsel on matters pertaining to HR Benefits
Support related governance groups, committees or processes
Member in good standing of state bar is required
5+ years handling ERISA benefit matters
Proficiency in assessing and resolving complex multi-issue matters, generally requiring cross-area coordination, with a practical, business-oriented approach
Strong communication and presentation skills and the ability to thrive in a decentralized office environment.
Demonstrated ability to thrive in a diverse team environment.
Ability to discuss and manage outside counsel fee negotiations on a matter by matter basis
