This individual will be responsible for providing leadership/direction over the Independent Channel production underwriting team(s) and build/maintain productive customer relationships. This position will oversee Managing Chief Underwriters/Team Leaders who are responsible for underwriting teams that review applications for insurance, accept or deny risk based on company guidelines, and meet the company's financial objectives. This position will also play a role in managing, coordinating, or participating in projects and providing 2nd signature reviews on large face amount risks as needed. This position will be responsible for leading approximately 2-5 people managers and report to the Senior Director over Underwriting Operations.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Provide guidance to Managing Chief Underwriters, field force, and home office staff regarding underwriting philosophy and requirements.

  • Enhance field relationships through proactive, effective management and problem resolution.

  • Recognize and address departmental trends and patterns that positively or negatively impact risk management.

  • Mentor and develop the Managing Chief Underwriters, support their development and training, and support developmental action plans.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of leadership experience characterized by effective planning and execution that deliver results; Affinity or experience in operational management, building high performance teams, performance metrics, project management, and process improvement.

  • 10+ plus years of experience applying life underwriting knowledge and risk management experience to include a strong background in impaired risk and financial underwriting.

  • Strong people management skills/experience to include coaching and development, performance management, and holding people accountable for results.

  • Possess a $10 million plus Life Approval Authority Limit

  • Bachelor's degree; MBA a plus

  • Excellent communication (verbal and written), team building, and strong interpersonal and customer engagement skills; Ability to present to audiences and tailor message according to audience.

  • Consistently organizes and expresses ideas/assessments clearly and concisely.

  • Experience leading team(s) or departments characterized by effective cross-departmental collaboration, excellent internal and external customer service skills including patience, diplomacy, tactfulness, ability to remain calm and composed under pressure, effective listening skills and professionalism.

  • Proven ability to mentor, train, and develop team members; positively affect decisions though consultation, negotiation, and recommendations. Ability to provide honest, candid and respectful feedback in a timely fashion. Build trust by treating others with respect, offers to help and/or assist others to achieve goals.

  • Experience building high performance teams, instilling a results-oriented customer-centric culture with superior performance management capabilities.

  • Experience in leading or participate on strategic initiatives or projects.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • FALU, and FLMI designation preferred. If does not have a FALU or FLMI, must possess and/or display a willingness to obtain the designations.

  • Project and process improvement experience and/or certifications a plus

  • Life underwriting experience to include large case experience

  • EKG interpretation a plus

  • Project management and process improvement certifications.

  • Participation on a local Underwriting Association Board or other industry related function, industry related presentations, and meeting facilitation.

VIEW JOBS 9/12/2019 12:00:00 AM 2019-12-11T00:00 Position Description The Credit Risk Director is responsible for the design and implementation of independent Risk Management's (IRM) monitoring of and reporting on performance of the Consumer unsecured loan portfolio. In addition, the role will develop and execute a risk-based annual testing plan; including, documenting and communication results, and escalating issues as necessary. Position will be the primary contact point for review and challenge of Business Line (BL) credit related activities. Job Responsibilities * Build-out a comprehensive credit risk testing plan for the unsecured portfolio * Set criteria for testing the effectiveness of credit related controls and independently test the effectiveness of those controls * Execute a risk-based annual testing plan; report on results and escalate issues as necessary * Recommend ad hoc testing based on changes in the credit / business environment or observed portfolio weakness * Build-out and execute a comprehensive portfolio monitoring and reporting process; identifying and measuring credit risk, focusing on emerging trends and key credit metrics, publishing findings in a concise and focused manner * Review and challenge material estimates and/or the processes that provide estimates used in managing the BL, including loss forecast, ALLL, stress tests, loss assumptions, and credit decision strategies * Provide an independent view and 'effective challenge' to BL credit risk management activities through active engagement with BL peers and BL operating routines * Review and challenge BL credit policies, standards, and procedures * Review and challenge BL internal credit risk rating systems and ratings; consistency of those ratings and underwriting criteria * Approve/disapprove credit policy exceptions * Review and challenge BL loss mitigation strategies, credit risk related controls, and monitoring and testing routines * Monitor conformity with enterprise credit policies * Escalate credit concerns to the Chief Credit Risk Officer * Manage performance and development of assigned team * Provide strategic direction and strong leadership for assigned area Qualifications * 8+ years pertinent experience in credit risk management or applicable BL with emphasis on unsecured lending products * Strong knowledge of common risk management methodologies * Well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills and experience * Advanced analytical, writing and presentation skills * Advanced knowledge and capabilities with the Microsoft suite of products; expertise using VBA, Power BI, SQL and SAS * Proven track record of achieving business objectives, particularly during times of organizational change and challenge * High level of personal integrity, with the ability to handle matters professionally, and with the appropriate level of judgement and maturity * Advanced consultative skills with the ability to build collaborative relationships with all levels of an organization * Proven ability to manage issues through to resolution; skilled at making sound judgment calls * Strong presence to interact with senior management, regulators, affiliates, and other third parties * BS/BA required, advanced degree strongly preferred Ally Overview Ally Financial Inc.
