Summary of Work

The Direct Care Associate III provides a wide array of services for the purpose of family preservations and/or reunification by following the family's case plan.

1.Enhance Client Household Management and Parenting Skills

a. Assess parent's strengths and areas in need of change in regards to parenting and household management

b. Meet with clients in their homes to assess parenting techniques, family interactions, household cleanliness and health hazards

c. Develop care specific parenting curriculum to meet the individual needs of the family

d. Increase the parent's understanding of normal ages and stages of child development and nurturing

e. Provide education regarding common childhood disorders which may include Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Conduct Disorder, Learning Disorders and Autism

f. Assist in developing appropriate and consistent child management techniques

g. Intervene and role model child management techniques if a situation arises that would be harmful to the child

2.Assist clients in developing skills to meet their own needs

a. Serve as advocate for family empowerment and self reliance

b. Provide emotional support and assist with developing self-esteem and self-confidence

c. Teach and model coping, communication and problem solving skills

d. Provide education and guidance to parents in relation to household tasks, meal planning, budgeting, personal hygiene, time organizations, communication and assessing community resources

e. Have knowledge of and assist families in connecting to community resources

f. Assist parents/families in becoming involved in activities designed to reduce isolation and establish support systems

3.Provide Transportation and Complete Other Duties as Assigned

a. Assist parents with transportation to access resources or attend appointments that will help reduce the risk of future maltreatment or help them become self reliant

b. Provide transportation and supervise visits between parents and children in foster care

c. Provide transportation for foster children to school, counseling or other locations as needed by the agency

d. Provide other transportation

e. Serve on various agency and community committees/projects

4.Act as a Member of the Child and Family Team

a. Provide input on the development of the care plan, goals and tasks

b. Establish trusting relationships with parents in order to encourage, teach, assist and provide emotional support

c. Monitor progress toward completing tasks and meeting goals

d. Keep the assigned case manager informed of family progress and issues

e. Participate and provide input in staff meetings, child and family team meetings, and inter-agency meetings

f. Be knowledgeable of safety issues and seek assistance from team members to ensure child's safety in emergency situations

g. Research and review literature on issues such as child management, child development, substance abuse, mental illness, etc.

h. Attend 20 hours of annual training which is pertinent to the provision of parent aide services

i. Be available to work non-traditional hours to meet the needs of the family and agency

j. other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires a high school diploma or GED and two (2) years of work experience with children, adolescents or patients/clients in a direct service capacity or in an educational setting. One year of education in a human service-related field may substitute for one year of the work experience requirement.
