Position Description
The Director of Libraries, Museums and Affiliate Facilities:
Provides strategic leadership in planning and problem-solving on a wide range of complex FAS and University-wide facility priorities including day-to-day operations, public safety, emergency response, accessibility, sustainability, and greenhouse gas reduction and accessibility. The Director is responsible for preserving Harvard assets; ensuring value for resources invested; protecting student, faculty, staff, and visitor safety; and ensuring smooth operation of day-to-day campus life for this portfolio.
Is responsible for 5 direct reports, 15 indirect reports, and various vendors. Ensures that the proper training, advice, and knowledge are available to the operations staff to keep pace with changing technologies. Establishes and oversees processes needed for maintenance, emergency repairs, and capital renovations.
Conducts strategic analysis for a complex portfolio of buildings and services for internal use and cross-tub reporting to the FAS Dean, Harvard and FAS Libraries, Central Administration, and other University Executives. Ability to analyze financial performance and budgetary issues, evaluate budget requests, and review year-end results.
Develops, manages, and monitors $35M facilities operations budget. Works closely with direct reports to ensure budgets are on target and funds are properly allocated across the portfolio.
Leads effort to continuously improve the security and preservation environments for FAS museums.
The position serves as a key advisor to Harvard Library leadership, FAS senior management, and SEAS senior management and liaises with a wide variety of University departments and stakeholders including the Harvard University Police Department, Parking Services, Mail Services, Dining Services, Environmental Health and Safety, and various academic and administrative departments.
Ensures various University and OPRP programs are consistently carried out across the building portfolio.
Responds to emergency situations as appropriate during working and off-hours.
Job Summary
The Office of Physical Resources & Planning (OPRP) provides complete and integrated planning and design services, construction management, and building renewal, maintenance, and operations management to maintain the physical resources of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) campus.
This position consolidates the management of collections-oriented facilities; the FAS Libraries and Museums, and the storage facilities in Southborough. The position is also responsible for the management of the new Science and Engineering Complex (SEC), the five existing FAS/SEAS facilities in Cambridge, and the Science Center. This position ensures consistent OPRP leadership and management practices at all facilities. The portfolio totals approximately 2,500,000 sq. ft., budget responsibility of approximately $35 million, and a staff of 20 with 5 direct reports.
