Position Summary:

The Director of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) will provide leadership and direction for establishing Lyells EH&S strategic vision, direction, and infrastructure. The position will be responsible for the design, development, implementation, and management of all environmental health & safety functions to serve Lyells strategic and tactical needs at both Seattle and South San Francisco sites. Candidates will be considered in both Seattle and South San Francisco.

Essential Functions:

  • Establish all aspects of Lyells corporate EH&S programs, including policies, procedures, and basic governance to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations as well as industry standard practices and expectations
  • Maintain all EH&S related licenses, permits and inspection reports, including those related building and fire codes, wastewater discharge and environmental codes, and laboratory and manufacturing practices
  • Develop and implement safety training programs for all Lyell employees
  • Provide review, consultation, and oversight of any/all contractor safety programs
  • Manage the investigation, corrective actions, and reporting of incidents and accidents
  • Analyze, audit, and inspect workplace environments (e.g. office, warehouse, laboratory, and manufacturing) to identify compliance issues, potential health and safety risks, and continuous improvement opportunities
  • Be the primary point-of-contact for company related health and safety issues and emergencies, including on-call events
  • Direct the planning, response, and recovery operation for emergency situations and disaster recovery and coordinate the development and implementation of appropriate response plans
  • Develop and present compliance tracking programs and metrics

Requirements

Preferred Experience:

  • 12+ years related experience in direct EH&S management and systems development
  • Expert level knowledge and application of environmental health and safety regulations and familiarity with EH&S regulatory agencies protocols (e.g. OSHA, NIH, EPA, DEP, etc.)
  • Direct experience with laboratory and manufacturing practices in the biotechnology, life sciences, or health care industry
  • Proven experience in building and implementing EH&S infrastructure, programs, and policies
  • Expertise in chemical hygiene, industrial hygiene, biological safety, and ergonomic programs
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
  • Attention to detail and follow-through
  • Known in the industry as having unreasonably high standards
  • Demonstrated ability to execute; strong bias for action
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communications skills, including effective platform presentation skills and training delivery skills; ability to mentor and lead others

Preferred Education:

  • Bachelors degree (BA/BS) or equivalent in EH&S Management, Engineering, Engineering Sciences, or related discipline.

Today, City Light is a recognized national leader in energy efficiency and environmental stewardship. We are looking for a seasoned safe driving professional with experience in both program and project management to join the Safety, Health and Wellness Division as a Safe Driving Coordinator. This position will research, plan, develop, implement, audit and evaluate a Driver Safety Program and activities for the Utility This position will report to the Safety, Health and Wellness Manager – Technical Programs. Job Responsibilities: * Develop and implement a Comprehensive Safe Driving Program for Seattle City Light; * Act as the Department Commercial Driver License ("CDL") subject matter expert by maintaining department CDL compliance, ensuring the department satisfies its CDL needs, and by acting as the liaison between the department and City for all CDL related matters; * Regularly monitor the programs database for overall safety score and documents follow-up actions; * Conduct needs analysis and provide content for the development and delivery of accountability measures by means of follow-up refresher training, based on monitoring employee driving safety performance statistical trends; * Review motor vehicle collision reports and injury accident reviews with drivers and other associated parties and makes recommendations on improvement; * Track reported accidents by pertinent classifications to identify trends that once established can be addressed by training; * Design and use various reports to share accident data with supervisors as needed but at least monthly * Point of contact regarding audits, inspections, and interventions * Recommend, develops and implements Safe Driving training procedures and presentations; * Interpret and communicate current and upcoming regulations to internal customers, fleet management, and garages and coordinates training on Federal and State (WSDOT, DMV, and DOSH) regulations as required with end users; * Support and administer safety policies, standards, programs, procedures, and strategies; * Participate in safety and health meetings, conferences, seminars and training programs; * Research new safety equipment ideas and best practices for safe driving; * Assume responsibility for maintaining effective communication and coordination with management and area personnel; * Ensure compliance and act as the Company liaison to regulators; * Ensure an efficient and safe work environment by providing periodic site and vehicle inspections and evaluations; * Provide technical direction and education to ensure compliance; * Maintain relationships with regulatory agencies, other departments and subject matter experts to obtain information and/or correct problems; * Travel and on call work expected; and, * Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications: Education: Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Health, Safety, Toxicology, Industrial Hygiene, Biology, Engineering or a related field (or a combination of education, training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class). Experience: Requires three years of experience in a safety or health related field (or a combination of education, training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class). Certification/License: Driver's License or equivalent mobility.
