Description

Earlham School of Religion (ESR), is a seminary in the Quaker tradition; located in Richmond, Indiana, a small city that's just a short drive away from several major metropolitan areas including Dayton, Cincinnati, Indianapolis and Chicago.

Earlham School of Religion is hiring a Director of Contextual Ministry Education and Assistant Professor of Practical Theology or Facilitator of Religious Life.

Job Summary:

Earlham School of Religion (ESR) seeks candidates for a full-time, residential, teaching faculty appointment in contextual ministry education, understood as synonymous with field education and supervised ministry. The appointment begins as soon as January 1, 2024.

Primary teaching and administrative responsibilities include oversight of the contextual ministry education program, including the associated year-long course, and support for contextual education across the curriculum (including required practicums for MDiv and Master of Peace and Social Transformation students). ESR's contextual placements include traditional congregational sites as well as non-traditional writing projects, chaplaincy, nonprofit work, and more.

Additional responsibilities will be adjusted to fit the strengths of the successful applicant, and we invite candidates who could serve as a facilitator of religious life at ESR or as an associate professor of practical theology.

As a facilitator of religious life at ESR, responsibilities could include nurturing individual and shared spiritual awareness and growth; building community within ESR and between ESR and the larger community, including with local Quaker meetings and faith community; and providing leadership for weekly community worship.

As an assistant professor of practical theology, responsibilities could include teaching a formational core course (Spiritual Formation and Personal Practice; Spiritual Formation and Public Mission; Diversity, Community, and Conflict; or Discernment of Call and Gifts) or Interfaith Dialogue.

Candidates will work with the faculty and the dean to develop appropriate responsibilities of program administration and teaching. Workload will include participation in faculty meeting, committee work, and academic advising. Courses will take several forms: 1) traditional, residential, semester-long; 2) online (synchronous or asynchronous); and 3) 2-week intensives.

ESR is a non-creedal seminary of the Religious Society of Friends (Quaker), with roughly half of the student body and multiple faculty coming from other traditions. ESR also works in partnership with Bethany Theological Seminary, a school of similar size serving the Church of the Brethren, another historic peace church.

Qualifications

  • Masters degree in a relevant subject area.

  • For an appointment as an associate professor, candidates will have a DMin or PhD in a relevant subject area.

  • Commitment to interdisciplinary work

  • Able to work with interfaith and contemporary approaches to spirituality, especially combining contemplation and action, and who can work with a theologically diverse student body that includes, for example, LGBTQ+ trinitarians, unaffiliated seekers, and non-theist Friends.

  • Applicants must be committed to working within a Quaker ethos that values integrity, consensus decision-making, equity, justice, and peacemaking. Familiarity with Quaker spirituality is highly desirable.

  • The ideal candidate will also have significant administrative and ministry experience and either demonstrated teaching ability or experience as a chaplain, pastor, and/or spiritual director.

  • Candidates must demonstrate an ability to teach creatively in face-to-face, synchronous video (Zoom), and online learning environments. ESR offers courses during the normal academic year in these formats as well as intensives in August, January, and May. ESR programs include an MDiv with several concentrations, an academic MA degree, a practical MA in Peace and Social Transformation, Master of Arts in Theopoetics and Writing, and a Certificate in Spiritual Formation.

  • Be a positive example and resource to all ESR Students
