Hiring/Budgeted Salary or Hourly Range: The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $47,800 - $54,866/yr. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University.

Department Marketing Statement

Housing, Dining & Auxiliary Enterprises houses 10,000 students, faculty and family residents on campus, provides support services for 9,300 students residing in the communities adjacent to the campus, serves 21,000 customers daily in its retail and board dining programs, manages the UCSB Campus Store and University Center, hosts 150,000 guests annually for conferences and meetings, manages a major events center (Events Center), and oversees the administration of transportation, parking and fleet services. Additional responsibilities in the HDAE portfolio include Administrative & Residential Information Technology (ARIT) and The Club & Guest House. HDAE employs 600 full-time employees and 1,800 student employees. HDAE maintains a physical plant of more than 3 million square feet of buildings and 250 acres of grounds and landscaping.

Brief Summary of Job Duties

The Dining Room & Catering Event Supervisor oversees activities in the dining room meal services providing excellent customer service. This position is responsible for event execution, and supervision. Acts as the onsite manager at catering events throughout the year which can include lead oversight on evenings and weekends.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • 1-3 years demonstrated ability to organize and manage a restaurant service and variety of events while maintaining a high standard of excellence.

  • 1-3 years proven ability to train, schedule and supervise student staff.

  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Working knowledge in food service and sanitation regulations

  • Intermediate computer application skills to include food service applications such as point of sale and inventory control software. Basic mathematics.

  • Skills in verbal and written communication.

Special Conditions of Employment

  • Satisfactory conviction history background check

  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record

  • ServSafe certification, or equivalent certification within 90 days of hire

  • Work days and hours will vary, evenings and weekends included.

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for up to 8 hours a day.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

Club Event Coordination/Supervision

  • 45%
  • Works with the Food & Beverage Manager to determine student staffing needs for dining room service and catering events.

  • Supervises activity in the dining room during meal services providing excellent customer service.

  • Supervises an on-site crew of up to 25 student employees.

  • Ensures all staff is properly dressed and ready for service when customers arrive.

  • Maintains the provision of excellent service and professionalism to all customers and guests. Ensures employees fully understand their contribution and assigned tasks delegated by the student manager/supervisor.

  • Works with the Food & Beverage Manager to resolve staffing issues.

  • Supervises the cleaning and organization of the dining room, office and storage associated with The Club & Guest House.

  • Helps train new employees and re-train current employees in efficient work methods.

  • Monitors time cards and reviews labor reports for accuracy. Verifies timekeeping reports with event staffing reports to ensure accurate time and wage records and advises timekeepers/supervisors to make corrections.

  • Utilizes various computer programs, including Excel, Word, E-mail and maintains inventory.

Event Setup Coordination

  • 45%
  • Coordinates and oversees food preparation on site.

  • Oversees the set-up of the food on-site, including hands-on set-up when needed. Ability to prioritize and make necessary adjustments for last minute events.

  • Stocks crates, racks and bins with supplies to be ready for events. Ensures the event area is organized and clean, and that signage is in order.

  • Coordinates set up, supervision, and security of all bars for catering. Ensures that University alcohol policies are adhered to at all times.

  • Ensures that food quality and safety standards are maintained on-site to achieve the highest public health standards and reduce the risk of food-borne illness.

  • Accounts for the cleaning of all event equipment. Checks working order of all event equipment on-site and off. Requests equipment repair work as needed.

  • Facilitates teamwork and a team spirit among all staff and managers within Housing, Dining & Auxiliary Enterprises (HDAE).

  • Provides support to the Food & Beverage Manager to achieve the goals and mission statement of HDAE.

  • Works closely with other departmental managers to effectively achieve the goals and objectives of The Club and Guest House.

  • Develops, promotes and adheres to safety rules, standards or techniques as an integral part of business.

  • Accepts special assignments, job rotation and reassignment as needed within HDAE.
