PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: Develops and implements strategy to acquire and cultivate digital audiences to convert and retain donors. Builds supporter journeys, oversees digital advertising budget, and manages operations for email fundraising appeals. Aligns digital fundraising goals and initiatives with overall supporter engagement strategy and organizational priorities. Provides line-management and oversight of two Digital Specialists.


  • Develop supporter journeys for new leads and existing supporters Collaborate with Direct Marketing, Web, Digital Engagement, and Brand & Engagement teams to deliver optimal digital experience for supporters and ensure continuity of messaging

  • Set and meet program goals through digital advertising platforms and inbound marketing tactics, including managing budget for investments, overseeing relationships with vendors, commissioning advertising content, establishing testing strategy, and ensuring program is optimized to meet annual targets

  • Acquire and convert new audiences to donors. Collaborate with cross-divisional supporter engagement staff to develop supporter journeys, retention strategies and their associated investments

  • Manage staff focused on delivering paid media and list buy program supporter journeys, and Oxfam's gift-giving e-commerce program; supervise and guide the team in creating and achieving performance goals through coaching, goal setting, and staff development; ensure regular dialogue regarding performance in line with OUS guidelines and feminist principles.

  • Project manage digital appeal planning and production, including email and advertising, in collaboration with fundraising directors and consulting agency. Lead internal, cross-divisional team to meet objectives for end of year fundraising campaign and response to humanitarian emergencies

  • Collaborate with Data Analysts to understand digital audience performance and market trends and make recommendations for shifts in program investments and approach

  • Develop digital appeal content using knowledge of Oxfam's work around the world and public communications. Ensure all appeals are compelling, on brand, accurate, and on schedule.


  • Will stay abreast of professional standards, trends and issues affecting this set of responsibilities, demonstrating continuous learning of the field.

  • BA/BS in related discipline or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.


  • 5 or more years of related experience in digital strategy and practices, including two years in digital fundraising.

  • 1-3 years of supervisory experience and demonstrated ability to develop and lead a team.

  • Working knowledge of inbound marketing and analytics tools.

  • Proficiency with a digital CRM and email marketing platform.

  • Proficiency in advertising platforms such as Facebook and Google AdWords.

  • Outstanding project management, negotiation, and organizational skills. Ability to plan and execute a program with multiple stakeholders.

  • Strong writing and editing skills.

  • High degree of initiative and commitment to goal attainment and quality standards.

  • Good judgment and interpersonal, listening and motivational skills. High degree of diplomacy.

  • Proven ability to work as a team member within a cohesive team environment.


  • Experience and/or certification with HubSpot and Google Analytics.

The Public Engagement division, which includes the Supporter Engagement, Brand & Engagement, Media & PR, Content, and Design teams, creates and implements communication strategies to build brand awareness, advance policy change and program impact, and fundraise from new and existing donor audiences. The Supporter Engagement team devises digital marketing strategies (email, social media, paid promotions, etc.) that enable Oxfam America's multiple public engagement initiatives (both virtual and in-person). We are seeking a highly qualified Director of Digital Marketing & Supporter Engagement who will collaborate with multiple stakeholders – media leads, campaigners, fundraisers, policy advisors, consultants – to set a data-driven online organizing strategy and create motivating and tailored supporter journeys for Oxfam audiences. The successful candidate will also lead a training program that increases the digital fluency of staff across Oxfam America. Position Overview Oxfam America is looking for an energetic and adaptable supporter engagement strategist with a deep understanding of digital marketing strategies and platforms and data-informed audience segmentation. The candidate should enjoy promoting multiple issues to supporters in service of multiple goals – building brand, achieving policy and program impact, and raising funds. They should have strong project management and relationship management skills. This is an opportunity to build and mentor a digital-first Supporter Engagement team at Oxfam America and motivate our audiences to help end the injustice of poverty here and abroad. The position is based in Boston or Washington DC and reports to the Vice President of Public Engagement, based in Boston. The Director of Digital Marketing & Supporter Engagement will collaborate closely with colleagues in Public Engagement, Resource Development (RD), Policy & Advocacy (P&A), Humanitarian and other Global Programs staff; the Senior Leadership Team, which includes the CEO, Chief of Staff and VPs; external vendors and consultants; and digital communications and fundraising staff in the Oxfam International confederation. They supervise a team of 7 supporter engagement and digital marketing specialists. Primary Job Functions * Set vision and direction for Oxfam America's digital communications in line with new strategic framework that emphasizes integrated supporter engagement (i.e. converting activists to donors and donors to activists). * Grow and cultivate Oxfam America's online and on-the-ground supporter base, emphasizing digital resources and strategies. * Lead development of multiple, fast-paced advocacy campaigns across digital platforms. * Lead coordination of digital fundraising campaigns, including with monthly sustainers, during humanitarian emergencies, and during peak holiday campaign season. * Collaborate with Public Engagement staff to use data and emerging technologies to create integrated supporter journeys for new and existing supporters. * Develop and implement social media strategies (primarily for the charitable organization, Oxfam America, but also for our nascent advocacy arm, Oxfam America Action Fund). * Manage investments in digital advertising strategies that build brand, generate leads, and drive advocacy and fundraising; * Manage and oversee digital vendors and consultants, including ad buyers and email strategists. * Manage Supporter Engagement budget in expenses, but also revenue forecasting and reforecasting. * Create and implement training program to increase digital fluency across Oxfam America (particularly among public-facing staff). * Liaise with web developers, constituent relationship management specialists, and data analysts as needed. Qualifications: Required * Bachelor's degree and 7-10 years digital work experience, with an emphasis in either agency or nonprofit marketing and public mobilization; * 5 or more years of experience managing a team of more than a half-dozen staff members; * Proven track record of using digital strategies to grow an organization's followers, impact, and fundraising. * Demonstrated ability to lead campaigns, in collaboration with others, that engage supporters in current events and the ongoing public conversation. * Substantial experience in email strategy and campaigns, social media campaigns, and digital advertising. * Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong relationships both internally and externally * Proven project management, including financial management, in a high-pressure work environment * Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills, tact and diplomacy * Ability to balance multiple tasks, work independently and meet tight deadlines. * Demonstrated attention to detail. * Ability to thrive in a highly collaborative, consultative, matrixed work environment.
