Position Summary and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Chair of the Art Department, the Digital Studio Art Technician is a part-time (20 hour/week), academic year (40-week) position. This position principally entails overseeing the Digital Studio facilities, with some attention paid to film-based photographic facilities. Operating on a ten-month contract, the incumbent will be tasked with managing, lending, and maintaining digital and film-based equipment available to students and faculty, overseeing a computer lab, conducting equipment inventory, and offering technical guidance, support, and training to faculty and students utilizing digital equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the Art Department's Digital Studio facilities, including the computer lab and equipment room, ensure availability during scheduled hours for equipment checkouts by students and faculty using an online inventory and reservation system.

  • Hold regularly scheduled weekly hours to reserve equipment for checkout by students and faculty. These hours may vary from semester to semester.

  • Recruit, train, and supervise work-study employee(s).

  • Maintain and manage the care, upkeep, and inventory of various equipment including photographic cameras (both film and digital), video cameras, audio equipment, lighting kits, monitors, and related items.

  • Manage an online inventory and reservation system for equipment.

  • Collaborate with faculty to identify and procure new equipment and supplies for labs (both computer and darkroom) and the Digital Studio.

  • Operate and maintain a comprehensive digital output lab, featuring large format Epson printers, an HP inkjet printer, an Imacon film scanner, Epson flatbed scanners, and Mac computers.

  • Ensure the readiness and upkeep of equipment and facilities in designated areas.

  • Provide technical support and assistance to students beyond regular course hours.

  • Coordinate purchase orders, repairs, technical support, and disposals, as necessary.

  • Manage signage in New Hackensack classrooms and common areas to facilitate student and faculty information.

  • Keep current with emerging technologies and trends through ongoing professional development activities.

  • Develop and lead workshops and demonstrations for students and faculty.

  • Collaborate with faculty on the development and support of curricular projects.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree (BA or BFA) in Art, preferably with a focus on Photography and/or Digital Media.

  • At least two years of relevant experience, which should include maintaining studio equipment in photography and/or video settings.

  • Extensive knowledge of both analog and digital photography, video, sound, computer technologies, and digital printing.

  • Strong organizational skills with a willingness to adapt and learn new skills and technologies as needed.

  • Excellent communication abilities and effective time management skills.

  • Prior experience in designing and conducting technology workshops.

  • Availability for occasional weekend work during the spring and fall semesters.
