Overview & Responsibilities

Purpose of the Job:

  • The reverse engineering and digital metrology team functions as the primary interface for metrology support globally.

  • Position involves inspection and data processing using metrology technology of Elliott and Non-Elliott equipment.

  • Position is responsible for conducting inspections in service shops and in the field, processing the inspections data, and handing the data off to engineering, drafting, and end users.

  • The inspections facilitate reverse engineering opportunities (rerates, modifications, replace in kind parts) along with additional metrology initiatives (alignments, virtual assembly, parts inspection)

  • Position supports the technical execution of numerous compressors, turbine and pump; replacement, rerate and upgrade (modification) orders. Workload volume of projects is high (50+ shop orders) with a varied and global customer base.

  • Position will interface primarily with the Reverse Engineering Manager, other Metrology Specialists on the team, and Drafting and Engineering personnel in addition to many others functions at Elliott.

Background and Experience:

  • Engineering degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Ability to operate inspection equipment (digital metrology equipment and hand tools).

  • Ability to operate CAD packages for data processing and modeling (Geomagic DesignX, Polyworks or equivalent).

  • Ability to communicate with customers/users, engineers and consultants at all levels.

  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.

  • Experience in turbomachinery industry preferred.

Nature of the Job:

  • The principal activities of this position are to perform inspections of existing equipment in service shops and at customer sites and process the inspection data for handoff to personnel both within and outside the Engineered Solutions engineering team.

  • This is a technical role focused on the collection, understanding, and processing of critical dimensions and data to supply to engineering and drafting in a useful package.

  • Travel will be required up to 50% on a frequent basis to support inspections and often will be on short notice as opportunities arise.

Specific Job Responsibilities/Competencies:

  • Perform inspections and engineering tasks within the Engineered Solutions Reverse Engineering team.

  • Handle inspections, data processing and modeling for jobs of various complexity.

  • Participates in solving difficult technical problems.

  • Support engineering and project management needs of rerate and modification orders with understanding of engineering and design principles, as well as Elliott products specifications and features, including design/manufacturing principles.

  • Knowledge of competitor products and specifications.

  • Support non-Elliott opportunities and jobs in the pre and post contract phase.

  • Flexibility is a must due to the wide range of vintage equipment we work on as well as non-Elliott opportunities that we accept. Position will require multi-tasking a large number of assignments concurrently.

  • Activity pace of the position is considered "up-tempo" and very demanding in all ways. The individual will constantly be facing new technical challenges that have had little or no previous applications.

  • Position will be instrumental in establishing procedures to be able/ready to respond to and support different jobs and inspections.

  • Identify and implement improvements to metrology processes.

  • Assist in determining estimates for required engineering time for proposals.

  • Project manage and plan resources for engineering tasks and inspections.

  • Act as part of a responsive team to project execution and other internal customers.

  • Assist in the development of procedures and tools to streamline inspection work functions and increase productivity.

  • Help identify opportunities to expand tools/equipment beyond current assets.

  • Assist in development of design standards and templates to reduce response time on future mods and rerates.

  • Participate in training activities to stay up to date on latest inspection equipment, techniques, and software.

  • Maintain a close working relationship with Drafting and Engineering teams and improve communication on execution processes.

  • Support Applications Engineering in customer specification reviews and other opportunity development.

  • Network with Reverse Engineering team and global network of inspectors to support all metrology efforts globally within the organization.

  • Assist with integration with Service Shops.

  • Contribute to a group working atmosphere conducive to motivation, work ethics, positive productivity, personal self-satisfaction and growth.

  • Promote and ensure quality and safety in all aspects of engineering work.

  • Represent the Company at customer sites for meetings, audits, data collection as required.

  • Participate in customer meetings and visits as needed.

  • Assist with marketing services and partnering with customers.

  • Maintain compressor, steam turbine and pump documentation for active projects, as well as provide guidance for correct shop order numbering assignments and other required information.

  • Assist in the development and maintenance of comments and exceptions to industry standards as well as to recurring customer specifications.
