The purpose of this job is to coordinate, craft, and execute digital communications strategy for the City of Columbia to connect, communicate, and actively engage with various audiences using social media and digital storytelling. Manages the city's main social media accounts and related management platforms while providing oversight and monitoring for the department and division accounts. Creates, coordinates, and approves digital content.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description
  • Manages and executes digital communications strategy for the city; aligns social media activities with city-wide calendar to engage community.

  • Creates, posts, monitors, and responds via social media with useful, compelling, and customized content. Facilitates transparent and consistent engagement with various constituencies.

  • Collaborates with citywide marketing and communications staff to create and execute targeted strategic social media and digital marketing.

  • Reviews analytics and creates reports on key metrics to inform stakeholders and guide social media and digital engagement strategies.

  • Advises city departments on social media and digital engagement strategies/best practices to leverage content across all accounts. Approves overall content/campaigns for all city and department-level digital accounts to ensure consistency of message, tone, voice, and city brand.

  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, or related field.
  • 3 to 5 years' experience in digital communications.

Licenses or Certifications

  • Valid driver's license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities which may be representative, but not all-inclusive of those commonly associated with this position

Knowledge of:

  • Social media platforms (ex: Facebook, Instagram, X/Twitter, etc.).

  • Social media management platforms (ex: Hootsuite).

  • Digital engagement strategies.

Skill in:

  • Copywriting and copy-editing for digital content.

  • Developing strategic social media and digital marketing content.

  • Communicating verbally and in writing to meet the needs of the audience.

  • Creating and conducting presentations.

  • Managing time effectively.

Ability to:

  • Engage with the public digitally.

  • Organize and prioritize work and concentrate on multiple tasks simultaneously.

  • Follow the City of Columbia guidelines and basic etiquette for positive branding and image development.

  • Recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

  • Provide high levels of effective customer service.

  • Work independently.

  • Regularly use a computer, software, phone, and related office equipment.

  • Focus on tasks.
