Job Overview

Dietetic technician provides nutritional assessment and counseling/education services to improve the health of individuals and communities within Summit County.

Description of Job Duty

Performs intake, answers phones, makes appointments, greets clients, and prepares paperwork as needed.

Explains WIC Program, How to use WIC Nutrition Card, and WIC rights and responsibilities for WIC at certification and recertification appointment.

Prepares participant charts for following business day, files charts each morning and afternoon and prepares new charts as needed.

Determines eligibility of clients through health and nutrition screening.

Identifies and documents nutrition risk(s) in low-risk clients and needs for nutrition education following clinic guidelines.

Identifies and refers high-risk clients to the Registered Dietitian (RD) for assessment and assignment of food package.

Performs height, weight and hemoglobin measurements in accordance with WIC policy and procedures.

Assigns food packages per program policy and client needs or refers to RD to approve or complete risk assessment and assignment of food package.

Receives and maintains current nutrition information and education from the WIC administrators or through the WIC computer program for education of clients.

Provides breastfeeding assessment, education and ongoing client support; promotes breastfeeding as the norm for infant feeding.

Determines a breastfeeding mother's eligibility for a breast pump, provides training and follow-up on use.

Refers clients to a variety of health care, community service, and human service agencies.

Explains and reviews the WIC Authorized Food list and ensures understanding of how to use the WIC Nutrition Card (WNC).

Reviews prenatal packet when Breastfeeding Peer is not available and teaches hand expression.

Reviews/approves formula prescriptions.

Utilizes tele interpreter services when working with non-English speaking participants.

Assists with orientation and training of dietetic students

Maintains cleanliness of WIC clinic, waiting areas and laboratories.

Monitors and receives messages from voice mail and responds accordingly.

Monitors electronic faxes (if assigned) and forwards faxes to appropriate staff or processes documents accordingly.

Works under the supervision of a registered and licensed Dietitian.

Assesses, plans and implements nutrition and wellness strategies to improve the health status of individuals and community residents.

Provides client reception, information gathering, data collection and data processing.

Maintains files, forms, folders and other related documents. Ensures documents are accurate, up-to-date and organized.

Designs nutrition and wellness education materials for use within Summit County Public Health clinics and community.

Completes goals and objectives for assigned grant programs.

Maintains cooperative working relationships among public and agency participants.

Participates in staff and community meetings as assigned.

Performs job duties under the regulations, policies and procedures set forth by Summit County Public Health and outside agencies such as the County Fiscal Officer, Ohio Department of Health, and state and federal government.

Performs any other duties as required for the efficient operation of Summit County Public Health.

Obliges, as set forth by the Summit County Public Health Emergency Operations Plan and within the scope of their employment, to be available for emergency service during routine and non-routine hours of operation including 24/7/365 availability. May be required to have medical clearance for respiratory protection or other personal protective equipment and may be exposed to inclement weather, extreme temperatures, unpleasant smells or odors, dust, dirt, fumes, airborne particles, pesticides, toxins or caustic chemicals.

Required Qualifications

Associate's degree in nutrition, dietetics, or related area, granted by an accredited college or university. Completion of a dietetic technician program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics to qualify for credentialing.

Must be registered as a Dietetic Technician, Registered (DTR) by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).

A minimum of two years previous related work experience in the delivery of nutrition services.

Current valid Ohio driver's license, automobile availability and insurance coverage.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee typically works in a clinic environment, under compromised circumstances of unavoidable disruptions such as noisy, crying, unruly children and caregivers, confined office and home space, different clinic locations, and home visits. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to transport program supplies and equipment, which may weigh up to 40 pounds.
