General Purpose:

Under general supervision of the Dietary Services Manager, the Cook / Dietary Aide position assures that resident meals and other nourishment's are properly prepared/cooked and apportioned according to authorized menus and individual care plans, and are served according to established schedules, consistent with regulations and standards of practice and provides assistance and support in the delivery of dietary services. Functions within strictly defined procedures with little latitude for variation or change.

Essential Functions and

  • Handle and prepare food in a sanitary manner.

  • Prepare food which is palatable and appetizing in appearance, with strict adherence to written recipes, menus, an individual diet orders, including:

  • Food items on assigned/scheduled menus;

  • Special items/meals/snacks/therapeutic or modified diets;

  • Special nourishment's/supplements as instructed by dietary services manager; labels with resident name and room number;

  • Refreshments for parties/special events as instructed by dietary services manager.

  • Adhere to food production and usage schedules.

  • Log and/or record temperatures of food storage as requested, i.e., refrigerators, freezers, milk dispensers, dry storage.

  • Maintain sanitation of equipment and utensils, and work/storage/serving areas by cleaning immediately after use and according to established schedule for routine cleaning and established policies and procedures.

  • Follow written menus and recipes.

  • Appropriately label and store food items/leftovers immediately after use.

  • Understand and be able to prepare therapeutic diets.

  • Be responsible for avoiding food waste.

  • Maintain strict adherence to serving schedules for meals.

  • Assist in establishment and maintenance of perpetual supplies inventory, and notifies dietary services manager of shortages or discrepancies.

  • Be responsible for care of food service equipment.

  • Maintain strict compliance with established policy/practices/standards for food preparation and storage.

  • Assist in orientation and on-job training of newly hired dietary services staff.

  • Performs other related duties or projects as assigned by dietary services manager.



  • Completion of approved Food, Safety and Sanitation Study Course

  • Completion of Care Initiatives Dietary Orientation which includes training on modified diets

  • High school diploma or equivalent


  • Demonstrated skills in quantity food preparation and service.


  • Functional Literacy in written and spoken English.

  • Proficient interpersonal relationships and communication skills.

  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.

  • Complete assignments timely, completely and accurately.

PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Performs/directs patient care services including, but not limited to, admission interview, accurate documentation and timely patient flow. 2. Ensures priority care is provided to patients in an emergency situation. 3. Performs related functions: a. Prepares rooms for daily patient care b. Responsible for sterilization; restocks instruments c. Cleans and resets rooms between patients d. Orders medications and supplies e. Helps orient new employees to clinic through explanation of procedures 4. Assists healthcare providers with exams, treatments, procedures and testing as directed. a. Ensures appropriate consent forms are obtained prior to the above 5. Accompanies the physician into the exam room or is connected remotely by audio for the patient visit documenting in the electronic medical record (EMR) all aspects of care to include chief complaint (CC), history of presenting illness (HPI), physical exam (PE) and patient plan as directed by the physician. 6. Works directly with physician to ensure the patient visit is appropriately documented. 7. Develops an understanding of physician practice patterns and key terms used by the physician to ensure efficient and accurate real time documentation of patient visit. QUALIFICATIONS: Experience Preferred: 2 years ambulatory care experience. Preferred: Bilingual -Spanish Education and/or Licensure-Certification: Must meet one of the following criteria: CMA: requires active certification as a Certified Medical Assistant by AAMA or a National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) through the National Center for Competency Testing. RMA: requires active registration as a Registered Medical Assistant by AMT within. RN: Active licensure as a Registered Nurse in Nebraska or Iowa, Nebraska and Iowa are compact states, so licensure is required in the state of residence. LPN: Active licensure as a Practical Nurse in Nebraska and/or Iowa. Nebraska and Iowa are compact states so licensure is required in the state of residence. Certified/registered Medical Assistants are required to have a Med Aide or Med Aide 40 course and certification. Course will be provided by Alegent Creighton Health within first week of hire. BLS or BLS instructor certification is required upon hire. Acceptable credentialing bodies and certifications include the following: American Red Cross: CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, American Safety and Health Institute: CPR, PRO, must say "Professional Level-with AED", and American Heart Association: Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers.
