As an employee of Sarpy County, you receive regular pay for the services you provide at a rate of $31.65 per hour. In addition to your hourly wage, Sarpy County provides benefits, such as insurance and retirement, which are valued at up to $28,456.30 per year.
GENERAL PURPOSE
Under the general supervision of the Fleet Service Manager or designee performs a variety of highly skilled mechanical repairs/maintenance on heavy trucks and equipment requiring moderate responsibility and independent judgment.
Selection Guidelines
Formal application, rating of education and experience, interview, reference checks, successful completion of a criminal background check, successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen, and other job related tests or checks may be required.
Perform repairs and maintenance on heavy trucks and equipment to minimize vehicle downtime and provide for safe operation.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, supervisors, County employees, elected officials, law enforcement, other agencies, and the general public.
Complete preventive maintenance schedules for all vehicles and mechanical equipment.
Utilize computer diagnostic equipment to assist in repairs.
Overhaul vehicle systems (e.g., hydraulics, climate control, axles, transmission, etc.) in an accurate and timely manner.
Make recommendations on outsourcing repairs based on cost and time efficiencies.
Provide emergency field assistance to disabled equipment as needed and appropriate.
Review work orders and refer to related repair manuals for references as necessary.
Install radio equipment and specialty lights in heavy trucks and equipment.
Maintain work area in a clean, orderly fashion.
Perform minor body repair, touch up and related work.
May perform fabrication and welding duties as needed.
Report to work with regular, predictable, and consistent attendance.
Peripheral Duties
Clean, pressure wash, and/or sandblast equipment
Serve as a member of various employee committees.
Perform other duties as directed or assigned.
Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED required.*
Degree or certification from an accredited trade school or college in repair and maintenance of diesel engines and equipment preferred.
Three (3) years' experience as a heavy duty truck/equipment mechanic in a full service diesel repair shop required.*
Special Requirements
Must have and maintain throughout employment a valid Drivers' License with CDL-B endorsement (or ability to obtain endorsement within three (3) months of hire), as well as meet eligibility requirements of "acceptable driver standards" as defined by the County. This is a safety-sensitive position and incumbent must meet and maintain Department of Transportation requirements.
Must supply and maintain own tools. Minimum of:

¼" to ½" Sockets
Wrenches <1 ½"
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of heavy truck and equipment mechanics
Considerable knowledge of diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, pumps, valves and generators
Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to maintenance and repair activities
Working knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, and tools used in modern equipment maintenance
Some knowledge of grades or quality of materials and equipment
Ability to understand and follow exacting verbal and written instructions
Ability to read and understand directions, manuals, and standard operating procedures
Ability to carry out assigned projects to their completion and meet deadlines
Ability to communicate effectively, in English, both verbally and in writing
Ability to work under pressure and/or frequent interruptions
Ability to operate tools and equipment including, but not limited to, motorized vehicles for mechanical testing purposes, power and hand tools and equipment for vehicle and mechanical system work; mechanic's tools including jacks, hydraulic lifts, air driven tools, and other tools required for repairs and routine maintenance of motorized vehicles; electronic vehicle diagnostic equipment; phone and computer; mobile or portable radio; welding and metal fabrication tools and equipment including electric and gas welders, plasma cutter, wire feed welder, oxygen-acetylene welder/ cutting torch, grinders and band saws

Work is frequently performed indoors in the Fleet Services garage facilities, with occasional outdoor work. Work hours are predominantly daylight hours, but may involve nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, as well as on-call and emergency call-in hours.
The employee will be working in an area near moving mechanical parts and involves exposure to high humidity, adverse weather conditions, dirt, dust, loud noise, temperature extremes, fumes, and toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee may be exposed to risk of electrical shock. The noise level is moderate to loud.

Required sensory abilities include vision, smell, hearing and touch. Visual abilities, correctable to normal ranges, include close and color vision as well as the depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
