POSITION PURPOSE:

Repairs and performance preventative maintenance on trailers, tractors and yard tractors at the Distribution Center. Responsible for diagnosing and repairing medium to heavy-duty refrigerated trucks and trailers under minimal supervision.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES:

  • Repair Preventative Maintenance inspections and repairs

  • Air and hydraulic brake repairs

  • Tire repairs

  • Warranty procedures

  • Driveline, steering & suspension

  • Electrical trouble-shooting

  • Ability to diagnose and repair lift gates, weld and fabricate as needed

  • AC and other duties as assigned.

  • Assist other Mechanics in repairs and will be expected to comply with Safety and EPA procedures and continue to learn additional mechanical duties such as advanced diagnostics, internal engine and transmission repairs.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent preferred.

  • Prefer certifications in tire & wheel, brakes, AC &/or EPA, engine rebuild, DOT inspections, transmissions, engines.

  • Must have a Valid Driver's License 21 years of age or older.

Experience and Knowledge Required:

  • 5 years of proven medium to heavy-duty vehicle repair including: PM's, tire & wheel, air & hydraulic brakes, diagnosis, computerized diagnostics, electrical trouble-shooting, electronic component repair and a minimum of 2 years' experience in refrigeration &/or overhauls and rebuilds of heavy-duty diesel engines and transmissions.

  • 5+ years' work experience post completion of trade qualification.

  • Some experience with Thermo King and Carrier refrigeration units.

Skills/Abilities:

  • Must be able to read codes and instructions on the computer.

  • Must be able to document repairs on the computer.

  • Must possess at minimum a set of hand tools up to (3/4").

  • Ability to work flexible schedules including shift work, weekends, holidays and on-call rotations for roadside assistance.

  • Strong verbal & documentation skills.

  • Dependable, responsible team player with a positive attitude.

Major Responsibilities: * Primary duties of this role consist of ensuring vehicles are maintained and safe for our customers. * Consistently using the tools and technologies provided at Penske to properly log, research, and complete repairs. This includes performing basic vehicle diagnostics. * Conducting Preventative Maintenance repairs to perform minor repairs such as, install mounted tires, replace or rotate tires and complete vehicle component lubrication and replacement, some electrical system repairs, cooling system maintenance on gas and diesel engine vehicles. * Continuously developing your skills in partnership with your manager utilizing Penske's available technician training and hands on mentoring. * Other projects and tasks as assigned by supervisor Qualifications: * Basic mechanical aptitude preferred, demonstrated past problem solving, tool usage, and repair experience required * 1-2 years of automotive or diesel experience or education preferred * High school diploma or equivalent required, vocational or technical certification in vehicle repair preferred * A valid driver's license is required, and, must either possess a CDL or have the ability to obtain a CDL license required * A positive, customer service attitude and effective communication skills * Basic computer skills required for data entry into maintenance systems. * Regular, predictable, full attendance is an essential function of the job. * Willingness to work the required schedule, work at the specific location required, complete Penske employment application, submit to a background screening to include criminal checks, past employment and education), the ability to pass a drug screen and physical as required by the Department of Transportation, and potential travel within a near geography for training are required.
