Work Shift: variable, days/evenings

Job Summary: Works as an adjunct to licensed nurse and under the supervision of licensed nurse to perform specialized skills in the delivery of hemodialysis treatments.

Minimum Education: High School Diploma or GED.

Licensure, Registration and/or Certification: Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician (CCHT), Certified Hemodialysis Technologist/Technician (CHT) or equivalent within 18 months of hire.

Work Experience: Requires previous experience as a Dialysis Technician.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Effective interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.

Competence in caring for persons in multiple age groups with a wide variety of illnesses, performance of nurse technician duties and advanced skills in hemodialysis. Ability to organize and prioritize work in an effective and efficient manner.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities: Provides patient care to an assigned group of patients, utilizing basic skills and knowledge.

Obtains patient weights, vital signs prior to treatment. Inspects the patient's hemodialysis access. Delivers hemodialysis treatment and determines patient's response.

Reports significant change to licensed personnel. Demonstrates specialty skills/knowledge appropriate to patient population. Uses proper aseptic technique in handling supplies, equipment & during delivery of hemodialysis.

Performs venipuncture on fistulas & grafts. Accesses hemodialysis catheters under the supervision of the RN or LPN. Initiates, monitors & intervenes hemodialysis per unit protocol.

Documents data according to unit and hospital policy. Records treatments or procedures performed legibly and accurately. Performs environmental activities to maintain a clean and orderly unit.

Performs R/O water testing per AAMI standards. Supports unit/hospital goals through PI and educational activities. Attends mandatory in-services and meets unit educational standards. Modifies behavior performance to comply with care standards and unit requirements.

Decision Making: Independent judgment in making minor decisions where alternatives are limited and standard policies/protocols have been established.

Working Relationships: Works directly with patients and/or customers.

Works with internal and/or external customers via telephone or face to face interaction. Works with other healthcare professionals and staff.
