Overview

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) is part of the team providing direct care to patients with End Stage Renal Disease. The PCT supports clinical staff, start to finish, throughout the dialysis treatment process, and delivers prescribed dialysis treatment according to physician orders and nursing assessment.

Responsibilities

  • Obtains and records patient vital signs and machine readings according to facility policies.

  • Sets up and breaks down the dialysis blood system for the treatment process.

  • Inserts and removes access needles in patients for dialysis treatment.

  • Monitors and assesses patients during the course of treatment, documents changes in the patient condition, and informs charge nurse of problems during treatment.

  • Calculates patient's weight loss to reach dry weight.

  • Maintains and tracks inventory.

  • Performs laboratory work.

  • Determines patient care priorities and organizes work load efficiently and effectively.

  • Maintains professional working relationship, observing patient privacy and rights.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.

  • Dialysis experience preferred.

  • Previous healthcare experience preferred.

  • CNA, EMT, Medical Assistant, CNT, candidates with Phlebotomy skills are desired.

Certification:

The PCT must be certified as a hemodialysis technician by a nationally accepted certification exam within 18 months of date of hire.

Responsibilities * Provides nursing care thorough patient assessment, initiation and discontinuation of treatment, monitoring during treatment, assessment following treatment, completing primary nurse responsibilities, assuring ordered lab is obtained. * Assess and monitors the patient access, taking appropriate action if a problem is noted. Documents thoroughly. * Understands and follows the clinic infection control policies and procedures. * Understands the basic concepts of water treatment and reuse and the effects on patient care. * Communicates clearly and effectively with co-workers, physicians, patients, and supervisors, keeping all appropriate people aware of changes in the patient condition. * Is knowledgeable of and follows the clinics' Risk Management program. * May be assigned to administer medications to patients, educates the patient about medications ordered by the physician, and documents according to DCI policy. * Attends required in-services and staff meetings to maintain and expand competency and skills. Qualifications * Completion of an accredited program in practical nursing. * Current LPN license * Current CPR/AED certification * Meets state requirements for certification or IV Therapy training. * DCI provides comprehensive hands-on and theory orientation/training in order to equip our nurses for success. * Should have knowledge of Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.
