This job works collaboratively with and under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) to provide support services in the delivery of hemodialysis and related treatments. Provides a safe environment for the patient and performs quality testing and disinfection of machines and other equipment. Assists with direct patient care, including collection of vital signs and other data, assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADL) needs, heavy lifting and transferring patients to and from the dialysis unit. Provides care and service to individuals of all assigned age groups and maintains accurate and complete documentation.

Education

Required

  • High School diploma or equivalent

Work Experience

Required

  • One year experience in chronic or acute hemodialysis unit or completion of an accredited dialysis training program.

Certifications

Required

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association

Preferred

  • Certification as a hemodialysis technician by National Association of Nephrology Technicians

Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of information.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally.

  • Must be proficient with Windows-style applications, various software packages specific to role and keyboard.

  • Strong interpersonal skills.

  • Good organizational skills.

  • Familiarity with common medical terminology.

  • Self-directed including the ability to set priorities and work efficiently under pressure.

  • Ability to work flexible schedule, as needed.

Job Duties

  • Assists the RN in care for the dialysis patient based on physical, psycho/social, educational, safety and related criteria, appropriate to the ages of patients served in assigned areas.

  • Performs the ability to safely set up and maintain hemodialysis equipment and systems.

  • Performs the ability to transfer patients in a safe and timely manner.

  • Maintains unit cleanliness and safety of environment in the patient care area.

  • Performs effective communication skills and accountability with the patient care team including appropriate documentation of tasks performed and reporting of patient-related assessment data.

  • Performs responsibility for professional development and maintaining required clinical knowledge, technical skills, training and credentials.

  • Effectively changes focus as needed based on fluctuation in business operations including census, system, procedures, etc.

  • Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including but not limited to: respect for privacy, method of introduction to the patient, adapting explanation of services or procedures to be performed, requesting permissions and communication style.

The physical essential functions of this job include (but are not limited to) the following: Frequently exerting 10 to 20 pounds of force to move objects; occasionally exerting up to 100 pounds of force. Mechanical lifting devices (carts, dollies, etc.) or team lifts should be utilized.

Must be able to travel throughout and between facilities.

The incumbent works in a patient care area; works in an area where patients enter; works directly with patients; and/or works with specimens that could contain diseases. There may be an occupational risk for exposure to all communicable diseases.
