The Incumbent's primary duty is in the area of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), where he/she operates a 1.5 Tesla MRI scanner with an associated automatic injector system, and a stand-alone 3-D Workstation. As a secondary duty, the Incumbent performs a variety of diagnostic radiographic and fluoroscopic examinations, which range in complexity from routine to moderately complex. The Incumbent will be actively involved in all phases of work flow within the Imaging Service.

The Incumbent will be responsible to safeguard the MRI Scanning environment so as to maintain a safe condition at all times. No patient will be left unattended in the MRI scanning environment, and no entry will be permitted to the area without assessment by the incumbent of the ferromagnetic or other risks of entry.
The Incumbent will be required to provide input for the development of policy and procedure for the MRI section, pursuant to the delivery of MRI services at the highest possible standard of patient safety, in accordance with the recommendations of the American College of Radiology, The Joint Commission and Veterans Health Administration (VHA) policies.
The Incumbent will rotate with other MRI incumbents in cleaning the magnet room (Zone 4) and equipment.
Provides input to develop, maintain, and improve systems to accommodate the ordering, approval, scheduling, performance, interpretation, and long term archival of MRI and Imaging examinations, based on the established features of VISTA architecture.
In conjunction with the radiologist (both facility and VISN 23), develops, maintains, and improves a system of examination protocols in order to standardize examination appearance, to tailor the images obtained to the pathologic condition being investigated, and to optimize the benefit to the patient being examined.
Contacts referring physicians for pain control and or sedative medication for patients which cannot tolerate MRI procedure.
Collaborates with other personnel in MRI principles, procedures, capabilities, techniques, and equipment. Explains concepts and principles of the methodology and its use and limitations as a diagnostic tool. Develops or adapts and documents new or changed procedures to accommodate equipment changes or new techniques in MR imaging.
The Incumbent will interpret requests and instructions from medical providers, under the guidance of the Radiologist.
The Incumbent will assign appointments and communicate necessary preparation instructions to the patient as a back up to the Medical Support Assistant.
Properly identifies patient images, i.e. Right, left, etc. Identifies patient prior to exam, and must be certain patient identification and the requests are identical by using at least two patient identifiers.

Certification - Advanced American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) certification for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
Education Accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from schools accredited by the ARRT and certification by the ARRT in radiology.
Must be proficient in spoken and written English.
Grade Determinations: GS -9 - Experience. At least 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level.
