Position Summary:

The diagnostic medical sonographer reports to the Manager of Radiology and is responsible for the independent operation of sonographic equipment and for performing and communicating results of diagnostic and therapeutic exams using sonography. The sonographer positions patients for appropriate imaging following established protocols, explains procedures to patient and or family to reduce anxiety and obtain patient cooperation.

Produces quality imaging through proper positioning and system parameters. Maintains the safety of patient, family and staff.

Essential Job functions:

Perform radiologic testing on inpatients, outpatients and Emergency Department patients following physician orders, on the type of test administered, following established policies, protocols and standards. Maintains image quality within standards in the performance of all testing. Success measurable by evaluation of image quality, adherence to protocols and repeat analysis

Ensure safe administration of medications and contrast, following all standards, policies and procedures.

Provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served, by meeting their physical and emotional needs to complete testing/care in a safe manner.

Complete all necessary documentation and image distribution by following established protocols and procedures to maintain the integrity of the patient medical record, written and electronic.

Ensure the safety of patients, families, workers and physicians by following all safety policies. Complies with all personal safety policies and procedures.

Maintain quality standards through the performance of all quality control procedures. Recognize, communicate, correct and/or escalate any conditions that may impact the quality of care provided.

Supports appropriate billing through order verification, timely completion of RIS functions, complies with all policies and procedures required for precertification. Measurable through audit of patient charge errors, late billing reports.

Complies with all policies, procedures and standards in the performance of invasive procedures, includes patient consent, universal protocol, sterile technique, procedure performance, specimen handling and post procedure education, measurable through direct observation.

Demonstrate consistent knowledge of information systems procedures and protocols in order to accurately and efficiently process patients within the system.

Change Management: Actively participates and contributes to diagnostic imaging services performance improvement initiatives, team member engagement activities; has the ability to alter practice in the ever-changing healthcare environment.

Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

Associates Degree or a Graduate of a JCERT school of Ultrasonography. Preferred registry from the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS). Unregistered must have graduated from approved school. BLS Certification required.

Maintains patient safety. Currently hiring for the following locations : Euclid Hospitaland Twinsburg Family Health Center . Shifts will vary. Responsibilities: * Performs ultrasound studies (i.e. obstetrical, GYN, abdominal, retro peritoneal, small parts, pediatric, and vascular). * Consults with referring physician regarding patients' medical history and selection of appropriate procedures and equipment required for proper diagnosis. * Reviews charts, previous reports and requisition prior to the exam. * Educates patients regarding procedures, equipment and exam to ensure understanding and cooperation. * Ensures patients' comfort and safety during and after the exam. * Assists with scheduling of patients and schedules all emergency patients for diagnostic ultrasound procedures. * Monitors all appointments scheduled for ultrasound examinations. * Performs preliminary research on patients when preparations are not provided and determines priority of patients based on the daily schedules. * Acquires, archives, transmits and prints images via PACS. * Completes after hours transmission of images and appropriate paperwork. * Immediately reports any malfunctions to help desk and PACS Administrator. * Processes billing via RIS. Assures proper function of ultrasound equipment and notifies clinical engineering of any equipment malfunctions. * Adequately supplies exam rooms with linen and related medical supplies. * Assists with clinical instruction of ultrasound students and residents and in-service education of staff members. * Assists with orienting new employees to the equipment, department procedures and scanning protocols. * Demonstrates ultrasound equipment for staff and visitors. * Potentially rotates through all diagnostic imaging modalities, sites and/or locations. * Assists in new investigative techniques, procedures and equipment. * Maintains the most up to date knowledge in the field through self-motivated education and attendance of appropriate conferences and symposiums. * RDMS must be maintained and in good standing. * If working within the Imaging Institute, performs non-invasive vascular studies to include veins, arteries, pulse volume readings and assist the physician during invasive studies. * Other duties as assigned. Education: * Graduate of an accredited school in Diagnostic Medical Sonography and in good standing. Certifications: * If working within the OBGYN/Women's Health Institute, must be a Registered Diagnostic Sonographer (RDMS) through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) within one year of hire. Certification within OB/GYN (RDMS, OB/GYN) must be obtained within one year of hire. * If working within the Imaging Institute, must be a Registered Diagnostic Sonographer (RDMS) through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) or American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) RT(S) or RT(VS) upon hire. Must have one certification within Abdominal (RDMS, AB), OB/GYN (RDMS, OB/GYN) or Vascular (RVT, VT) through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) upon hire. The other two certifications must be obtained within twelve months of hire. * Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required. Complexity of Work: * Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. * Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action. Work Experience: * Minimum of one year experience as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer preferred. Physical Requirements: * Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time. * Must be able to lift or assist with lifting patients of varying weight and manipulate equipment daily.
