Diagnostic Medical Sonographer A Brief Overview Performs ultrasonic diagnostic procedures and studies for patients as requested by physician. Performs various technical procedures utilizing independent judgment. Provides on-call and callback coverage as required. What you will do Reviews patient#s medical record prior to each ultrasound examination to obtain and record identifying information required for the procedure and patient records. Demonstrates knowledge and skills and maintains competencies required to provide care appropriate to age of the patients served within department. Assesses and selects proper techniques for a given patient study and circumstance. Informs and explains examination purposes and procedures to the patient prior to commencement of testing in a caring, compassionate and sensitive manner. Performs various diagnostic ultrasound imaging procedures as ordered by physician, consistent with patient care policies and procedures, demonstrated competencies, and with consideration given to risk management, infection control practices, patient safety practices and departmental activities.

  • Practices proper aseptic techniques and universal precautions according to approved procedures.

  • Selects and prepares equipment and supplies needed for each procedure. Exercises judgment in selecting proper equipment/computer settings.

  • Positions and instructs patients regarding procedures as applicable.

  • Performs procedures (vascular studies, neonatal heads, Doppler studies, etc.) utilizing ultrasonic imaging equipment in various modules and techniques to locate, evaluate and scan areas to produce desired images. Records diagnostic data on magnetic tape, computerized disk, strip printout or film.

  • Performs patient studies as qualified by education, skill, competency, and experience.

  • Monitors patient condition and equipment during procedure.

  • Reports adverse or any unusual reactions or events.

  • Records and prepares images of ultrasound for viewing in accordance with established standard procedures for physician#s interpretation of the exam and long-term storage.

  • Recognizes and corrects technical errors to ensure a clear and accurate scan/image.

  • Provides staff and patient protection in accordance with prescribed radiation safety standards.

  • Ensures accurate documentation in performing and processing all procedures including proper ordering, charging, and computer entry.

  • Operates the Radiology Information System to enter required test data and patient information, using all appropriate modules with accuracy. Ensures patient information and images are correctly transmitted to PACS system. Documents care based on standards of care and practice and/or clinical priorities for documentation (assessment, ultrasound procedure, and patient#s response during procedure). Confers and works collaboratively with patient/family/hospital staff in a customer responsive and courteous manner, in compliance with iRESPECT standards and promoting patient/customer satisfaction to achieve positive patient outcomes. Maintains confidentiality in matters relating to patient/family, department and hospital information. Adheres to established department and organization policies (i.e. HIPAA, Confidentiality, and Compliance Policies). Responds appropriately to emergency situations and notifies appropriate personnel. Maintains required department records, reports and files. Utilizes patient computer systems to enter and retrieve data. Participates in quality/performance improvement. Collects quality data for monitoring performance improvement and to produce the best value service. Provides support to radiology and other medical and hospital staff to provide clinical assistance as needed. Assists in orientation and supervision of new staff members and students when they provide patient care, treatment and services as part of their training. Completes required continuous training and education, including department specific requirements. Responds to problems/opportunities to improve work environment and participates in unit based performance improvement activities which includes committees, monitoring and follow-up. Assists in care and maintenance of equipment and effective utilization of supplies. Reports malfunction of equipment to supervisor. Maintains a clean, orderly, safe environment for patients and personnel. Adheres to established policies, compliance/quality improvement, and patient safety, environment and infection control standards. Provides on-call and call back coverage as required. Qualifications Graduate of an AMA approved program in Ultrasound Required and Qualified by education, training or experience to work with the neonate, adolescent, adult and/or geriatric patient population as specialty assignment dictates. Qualifications

  • Graduate of an AMA approved program in Ultrasound Required and

  • ARDMS
