POSITION INFORMATION: Provides diabetes education for a study, department, or clinic, collaborates with other professionals, develops educational educational material, coordinates visits, and maintains records.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

  • Diabetes Education. Educates individuals with type-2 diabetes on the pathophysiology of diabetes, the psychological issues of having the disease, oral and injectable diabetic medications, and sick day management. Teaches families how to monitor blood sugars, and manage blood sugars with food and exercise.

  • Collaboration. Actively participates on the diabetes study team.

    Collaborates with study staff in meeting study objectives as outlined by the study protocol. Attends medical visits with study physician and completes study related associated paperwork.

  • Material Development. Develops educational materials such as the Diabetes Education Manual, workbooks, blood glucose meters and logbooks, and diabetes questionnaires to assess mastery of learned materials.

    May present material through lecture or with the use of multimedia video. Works with study participants in completing the education materials.

  • Visit Coordination. Coordinates patient visits and the associated work with the diabetes medical staff at the University site.

    Assists in setting schedules for return visits. Answers telephone inquiries.

  • Record Maintenance. Maintains study participant records according to study guidelines.

  • As Needed. Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, Nutritional Science, Public Health or other advanced healthcare degree

Experience: 24 months experience as a healthcare educator or experience in community health

Certifications/ Licenses: Selected candidate must be willing to obtain Certified Diabetes Educator certification

Preferred:

  • Dietitian or Dietitian Nutritionist holding active resignation with the Commission on Dietetic Registration

  • Experience with Pediatrics and with Native American communities.

The Certified Diabetic Educator (CDE) is a member of a multidisciplinary team using evidence based guidelines to train newly diagnosed pediatric diabetes patients, as well as their families. This team includes physician, mid-level practitioners, nurses, social worker/behavioral health counselor, dietitian, schedulers and the CDE. The CDE is critical in the presentation of the formal, structured, diabetes training program developed by the clinic and certified by the American Diabetes Association. The Harold Hamm Pediatric Diabetes and Endocrinology Clinic at OU Physicians-Tulsa is the only Center of Excellence for pediatric diabetes care in the region and pulls patients from several bordering states because of the standard of care achieved. The CDE also handles sick calls, reviews blood sugar logs for adjustment, coordinates and trains for insulin pump starts, continuous glucose sensor starts and Dexcom sensor starts and discusses treatment plans and adjustments with school staff. The CDE is also the primary individual providing case management services in a face to face visit with patients. Job Requirements: Education: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing or Nutritional Science Experience: 24 months experience as a Diabetes Educator Certifications/ Licenses: Certified Diabetes Educator; if the incumbent is a Nurse, they must be have State of Oklahoma Registered Nurse Certification; if the incumbent is a Nutritionist, they must be a Registered Dietitian and a Licensed Dietitian in the State of Oklahoma Equivalent/ Substitution: Will consider PharmD or Physician Assistant in lieu of Bachelor's degree Physical Requirements: The essential functions of this position will involve mobility (walking; being able to stand for long periods of time during patient exams/procedures, etc.).
