JOB DESCRIPTION - INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT, SPECIAL SERVICES

(Special Ed., non-SH, and other specialized instructional positions)

DEFINITION

To assist credentialed personnel, helping in education related activities and with routine clerical duties in a classroom or other setting for students requiring special services.

Performs other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Received general supervision from a principal and technical and functional supervision from a teacher or other credentialed personnel.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES - May include, but are not limited to, the following:

Assists in developing daily schedules for service of students.

  • Works with small groups of students in learning activities, assisting individuals as needed.

  • Uses appropriate behavior management techniques.

  • Administers and corrects prepared tests.

  • Records students' attendance and grades.

  • Secures and projects audio visual aids.

  • Collects and distributes instructional materials.

  • Participates in planning and developing programs of individualized instruction for each student.

  • Consults and distributes instructional materials.

  • Attends required in-service training sessions or workshops.

  • Assists students with physical disabilities and attends to their physical needs as necessary.

  • Performs duties, which require lifting, stooping and bending.

  • Assists with the evaluation of student skills and progress.

  • Records pertinent information and maintains student files.

  • Performs clerical tasks and operates office equipment.

  • Performs yard duty and supervision of students as necessary.

  • Performs related duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School diploma or equivalent

  • Successful completion of the Fort Bragg Unified School District proficiency test consistent with E.C. Section 45344.5

Knowledge of:

  • Basic methods of instruction

  • Specialized needs of emotionally disturbed, learning handicapped, at-risk students as assigned

  • Behavior modification techniques, including universal precautions

  • Physical, emotional and behavioral concerns of assigned students

  • First Aid and safety practices, including universal precautions

Ability to:

  • Direct the activities of and supervise students.

  • Follow written and oral instructions.

  • Maintain confidence and trust of students.

  • Assess student needs and progress and explain to those concerned with student development.

  • Work independently.

  • Understand and carry out directions.

  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

  • Learn to operate computers, specialized audio-visual, and other school equipment.

  • Maintain confidentiality.

  • Work and communicate effectively with students, teachers and other staff members.

Experience and Training

Any combination of experience and training, which would indicate possession of the above skills and abilities.

Special Requirements

Some positions in this class may require possession of a valid California driver's license.

Physical Requirements

Ability to exert 50 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

  • Ability to stoop, climb, stand for long periods of time and perform physical labor, physical mobility and stamina to participate in activities which may be strenuous.
