Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group):

The Surface Technology Leader provides technical and project leadership on sheet process development projects. In this role you are responsible for leading a team of engineers, scientists, and technicians to develop advanced surface treatment technologies and transfer them into manufacturing through engineering. The leader will be a key technology interface generating all aspects of process requirements and aligning the research/development activities to business needs. You may also act as a project manager leading new process integration/development with multi-functional teams. You are also responsible for growing finishing surface technology core competencies.

In accepting this position, you will be required to sign a non-compete agreement that extends for two (2) years after termination of your employment.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Builds creative surface treatment technologies/processes to improve glass surface attributes.

  • Provides technical expertise at the areas of glass surface cleaning, protection and chemical treatments.

  • Resolves technical issues related to surface defects through scientific understanding.

  • Coordinates the process development with R and E organizations from concept through technology transfer.

  • Leads the team and/or advises team members involved in product/process development.

  • Serves as a subject expert (SME) for the glass surface processes.

Travel Requirements (please note if international):

We anticipate domestic and international travel up to 25%, and up to a few weeks duration each time.

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

Our normal hours are 8:00 AM-5:00 PM, may have frequent teleconferences after hours.

Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration)

  • Ph.D. degree in Surface Chemistry/Material/Chemical Engineering or Physical Chemistry with 2+ years related experience is preferred; Or Master's degree with at least 6 years of related experience is acceptable.

Required Skills

  • Mastered one or multiple fields of surface treatment processes: surface cleaning/modification, plasma cleaning or etching, thin film coating, and chemical treatment.

  • Deep understanding of glass surface attributes such as particle, scratch, and electrostatic charge/discharge.

  • Ability to design, build and test new ideas and novel experiments from ground up.

  • Deep knowledge in surface chemistry and physics.

  • Experience with material science and surface characterization tools, such as ellipsometry, FTIR, XRR, XPS, AES, AFM, SIMS, SEM, EDX, RBS, UV-VIS and related spectroscopic techniques.

Desired Skills

  • Experience in crafting chemical treatment to deeply improve surface attributes such as anti-scratch, anti-electrostatic, self-cleaning functionalities.

  • Process development experience in glass/semiconductor material processing with fundamental understanding.

  • Industrial experience in high cleanliness with tight tolerance manufacturing environments.

  • Knowledge in plasma chemistry, plasma dynamics and reactive plasma diagnostic techniques are a plus.

  • Familiar with statistical data analysis and design of experiment methodologies.

  • Experience with wafer fab based processes, micro-electromechanical systems, or similar work experience.

  • Flexibility to adjust work schedule to accommodate business requirements.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills (oral & written).

  • Enthusiastic and self-motivated - self starter who is passionate about learning new things and making a difference.

  • Ability to work independently and with teams in a diverse environment.

Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group): Lead, execute and/or support current projects in the areas of general surface chemistry physics of materials, material science with emphasis on physical properties, and physical-chemistry. Conduct experiments using cleaning, etching and deposition techniques. Study interaction of surfaces with exterior environment using characterization tools for surface and bulk material properties. Create and/or support of innovative metrology and characterization tools related to different physical-chemistry interactions with surfaces. Key ability of interest is to create innovative and cost-effective products and/or supporting technology that can quickly enable new products. Day to Day Responsibilities: Lead, execute and support current projects in the areas of surface physics and chemistry interactions with glass surfaces and other related materials including polymers. Support new characterization tools and lab operations. Support with technical findings improvements on the combined chemical, optical and mechanical performance of glass substrates. Travel Requirements (please note if international): Occasional travel, mostly domestic but some overseas travel expected upon demand. Required Skills (These are skills that candidates MUST possess) * Ability to design, build and test novel experiments from ground up. * Deep understanding of physical-chemistry and surface science. * Strong understanding of optical materials with strong preference towards glasses and its physical properties. * Strong understanding of polymer physics, rheology, and general viscoelastic properties of materials. * Basic knowledge of mechanical properties of materials. Desired Skills (These are skills that would be nice for candidates to possess) * Knowledge of ion-exchanged or proton exchange. * Working knowledge of fracture mechanics. * Familiarity with statistical data analysis and working with large data sets. * Knowledge of electrostatics on surfaces and triboelectric charging. * Knowledge of electric circuits design. * Basic knowledge of thin-film deposition tools (e.g, E-beam, Magnetron sputtering, spray coating, spin coating, etc...). * Experience with optics. * Physical systems modeling. * Excellent written and oral presentation skills * Programming, preferably C, C# and Matlab. * Labview automation skills.
