Development Research Analyst

The George Mason University's Office of Advancement and Alumni Relations is looking for a Development Research Analyst.


Using independent judgment, strategic thinking, and problem-solving skills, the Development Research Analyst will provide support for the fundraising activities of George Mason University by assisting in the identification, qualification, and cultivation of major donor prospects and others as needed for University fundraising initiatives.

The primary responsibilities of this position include conducting detailed research for university fundraisers and Advancement leadership using online databases, Internet resources, and in-house data; analyzing, interpreting, and synthesizing biographical and financial information; and generating strategic reports and recommendations in support of university fundraising objectives and priorities. The incumbent will work closely with assigned fund raisers to support their successful cultivation and solicitation of prospective donors.

Principal Duties:

  • Plan and conduct research, both reactively and proactively, on individuals, foundation and corporate prospects, and donors;

  • Prepare concise, accurate reports for Mason fund raisers, administrators, and volunteers as requested, and support engagement activities with information that facilitates donor cultivation and

successful solicitations;

  • Actively support the identification and verification of new prospects discovered through database screening and other proactive resources, and is actively involved in developing the processes and policies for these efforts;

  • Support fundraiser use of prospect management aspects of the database by regularly auditing prospect tracking and cultivation information, and be involved in planning and outreach to front line fundraisers in support of moves management;

  • Provide staff training on the newest and most effective tools and resources.

Required Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of fundraising and proven experience producing profiles, analysis, and reporting to drive fundraising strategies;

  • Superior written and oral communication skills and the ability to be timely, thorough, accurate, and detail-oriented;

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and synthesize data from a wide variety of sources, including thorough knowledge of on line and print research resources, and present the resulting information in a clear summary;

  • Understanding of Prospect Management and use of the Foundation's database for prospect and moves management;

  • Highly effective interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively with a broad-range of expertise and seniority, and elicit cooperation without direct authority;

  • Ability to prioritize workloads and shifting priorities and meet deadlines while working on multiple projects simultaneously;

  • Exceptional computer skills that include Microsoft Office Suite, various prospect identification and relational databases;

  • Ability to quickly learn and provide instruction in the use of various web-based tools;

  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communication, Public Relations or any related field that emphasizes excellent writing and communications skills or equivalent combination of education and experience;

  • A minimum of two years of development research experience is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a higher education setting

The HUD Exchange centralizes resources for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's (HUD's) grantees, providing training, guidance, tools, reports, policy help desks, and much more. View the website at You will be involved in supporting a variety of tasks including but not limited to: responding to user inquiries, setting up and managing webinar and in-person trainings, managing web content using a content management system and other applications, drafting and editing web content for accuracy, clarity, and user-friendliness, and other project management tasks (note taking, budget tracking, etc.). You will contribute to delivering fresh, innovative, and user-focused content and responding to a wide array of user needs to support affordable housing and community development. You will be part of a collaborative, multi-disciplinary team of HUD subject matter experts, content managers, software developers, graphic designers, user experience experts, data analysts, and more.
