AES Distributed Energy is seeking a Development Engineer to drive solar PV and integrated battery energy storage (BESS) project development across the US, with the goal of increasing our portfolio of owner-operated commercial, industrial and utility scale PV and storage systems.
The Development Engineer will work closely with the Business Development and Finance teams to qualify new solar and battery storage project opportunities, perform technical due diligence on project practicality, and respond to RFPs from utilities, municipalities and others for the procurement of renewable energy. Project work will be focused on conceptual design evaluation.
The Development Engineer will also work with the larger Engineering and Solutions teams to identify product solutions, recommend technology for proposed applications, and perform value engineering exercises for actual projects, and product development. The daily activities will focus on producing and reviewing preliminary layouts, producing and reviewing energy estimates, reviewing consumption data and modeling storage solutions to meet projects requirements and providing high level major equipment recommendations.
The successful candidate will have a depth of experience in the design, engineering and analysis of photovoltaic systems and battery storage systems, ranging in capacity from 500kW to 50MW. Experience in proposal generation and financial metrics for PV systems and Power Purchase Agreements is preferred.
The position is in Boulder, CO, and may include up to 10% travel to project locations and partner offices.
Business Development Support
Technical diligence for new project opportunities, assess accuracy of third-party provided production estimates, site plans, product documentation and meteorological data
Energy production modeling for projects in development (PVSYST, Helioscope, Plant Predict)
Battery dispatch modeling for projects in development (Excel, Matlab)
Site evaluation (remote and in-person) for project suitability
Participate in project pricing and value engineering exercises
Support RFPs, Greenfield Development, and Acquisition conceptual design studies
Provide technical deliverables for RFP responses and proposals, both by self-performing, and coordinating external consultants
Evaluate emerging technology options in PV and battery storage
Analyze market trends and track suppliers of key technologies
Perform initial cost estimates and value engineering for new products
Participate with solutions team by identifying customer needs and market opportunities
Growth and Leadership
Improve and develop processes for more accurate and efficient evaluation of projects
Mentor and educate team on changing trends in project development
Participate in AES DE's growth planning process by contributing to process improvement task forces and other strategic planning activities
Skills and Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in engineering or equivalent technical field
4+ years of experience in solar PV project development, analysis and construction
1+ years of experience in battery storage system development and design
Proficiency with common PV system modeling tools and packages, such as PVSYST, Helioscope and Plant Predict
Proficiency with common CAD tools such as AutoCAD
Proficiency with project planning tools such as Microsoft Project
NABCEP PV Installation Professional certification
Spanish language skills
OSHA 10hr or comparable job-site safety certification
