Holyoke Community College is hiring exceptional ESOL Instructors/Professional Tutors who have a passion for teaching contextualized ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) to a diverse student body, preparing them for academic and professional success in an academic pathway in HCC's Foundations of Health and Practical Nursing programs, leading to Practical Nurse Licensure. Experienced ESOL instructors with some background in contextualized instruction, or healthcare experience, are especially encouraged to apply.

Holyoke Community College has been awarded a multi-year grant to work in close partnership with a regional employer on an innovative, Pay-to-Train model for Patient Care Technicians to enter an educational and career pathway to become a Licensed Practical Nurse.  The project will prioritize low-income women, BIPOC and Latinx residents, single and immigrant women who may have prior degrees or healthcare work experience in their home country. The project has a particular focus on, and support for, adults in need of contextualized English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), throughout the 2-year program of study (and pre-requisite courses).

Successful students must prepare and qualify for, and persist in, a rigorous 2-year academic program (Foundations of Health and Practical Nurse Certificate - https://sites.google.com/hcc.edu/nursingprograms/home/coursework-requirements ) Students will be paid for study and work time throughout the program, and will be offered a wide range of supports, including ESOL. HCC is seeking 1-2 ESOL Instructors/Professional Tutors to join the team implementing this innovative, student-centered learning opportunity!

Under the general supervision of the Assistant Vice President of Adult Education and Workforce Development and program Training Managers, the qualified applicant will develop high-quality, interactive, contextualized ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) curricula for non-native speakers of English preparing to enter and successfully complete the HCC Foundations of Health and Practical Nursing Certificate programs, and to prepare for the PAX, NEX, NCLEX or other high-stakes industry exams.

Curriculum Development: Will develop contextualized curriculum to support students in required health and science coursework including BIO 107 (Introduction to Cell Functions), Anatomy and Physiology, Introduction to Psychology, Nutrition, etc., as well as exam preparation for the PAX, NEX and NCLEX nursing exams, or similar high-stakes exams.

Instruction: Contextualized ESOL Instructional support will be provided through co-curricular noncredit courses, or through small group or individual tutoring. Instructor(s) will schedule class and tutoring times to best support students' schedules. Regular teaching and/or tutoring hours at the HCC Center for Health Education or Marieb Center will be required, with supplemental online support as needed. We intend to hire two Instructor/Tutors to meet student needs, who will share this workload. Some daytime hours (M-F) are required. Additional online support may be offered evenings or weekends, according to student needs and instructor availability.

  • Works with a team, including but not limited to the Assistant Vice President, Training Managers, Director of ESOL, and instructors to develop and deliver contextualized ESOL instruction.

  • Provides ongoing tutoring support to ESOL students enrolled in HCC Foundations of Health and Practical Nursing Certificate programs.

  • For formal courses, prepares syllabus, assessments, lesson plans and activities; provides to Assistant VP or Training Manager in advance of each class for approval.

  • Evaluates students' written assignments and exams as applicable.

  • Ability to work with classroom style as provided in order to meet specifications of course.

  • Completes required reporting and documentation, including assessment of learning outcomes, attendance verifications, evaluations, etc.

  • Tutoring

  • Assesses student's strengths and areas for growth.

  • Designs and implements academic support plans for students based upon assessed strengths and needs.

  • Works one-on-one or in small groups with a caseload of students (ca. 18-25) in the capacity of a Learning Coach.  Meets with student caseload on a regular basis to monitor academic progress.

  • Interprets teacher interventions and classroom directions.

  • Administers and uses learning style inventories to plan a course of action for students seeking help.

  • Uses innovative teaching/learning strategies to enhance student understanding of course content.

  • Assists students in the writing process, pre-drafting, revising and editing.

  • Uses classroom management skills to facilitate study groups or supplemental instruction, as needed.

  • Provides referrals for students at HCC; connecting them with other necessary HCC support services; OSDDS, CAPS Center, Writing Center, Academic Advisor, MERC, Online tutoring, Thrive, and New Directions, as needed.

  • Must be able to commit to hours of courses as scheduled.

  • Performs other duties as assigned by administration.

REQUIRED:  

  • Bachelor's degree is required, along with prior teaching experience, particularly in a community college or workforce training environment.

  • At least two years' experience teaching adult ESOL/ESL/EFL students.

  • Demonstrated strong communication, writing and presentation skills; 

  • Strong facilitation/training experience in-group context with a commitment to working with diverse populations; 

  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple assignments and coordinate training session logistics.

PREFERRED:  

  • Master's Degree or TESOL Certification.

  • Bilingual skills (particularly Spanish).

  • Prior experience with contextualized ESOL curriculum development and/or healthcare or ESOL for healthcare careers.

Compensation:  $32/hour; non-benefited

Hours: Up to 18.5 hours/week. Primarily daytime hours M-F, with some evening or weekend if available and needed by students.
