Scrum/XP/Agile team in midtown Manhattan is looking for an experienced Rubyist or experienced Java/C#/Python developer interested in learning Ruby. We are an established, four developer Scrum/XP team. Our team contains experienced Rails developers who program, extensively test and deploy predictably on a weekly iteration cycle. We emphasize work/life balance, sustainable pace and collaborative feature development in a collegial environment.

Work entails creating and maintaining Ruby on Rails websites and other consumer digital products for Simon & Schuster, a leading English Language trade publisher. Position reports directly to VP Technology for Simon & Schuster Digital. Simon & Schuster is a women-run organization, an equal opportunity employer and a part of CBS Corporation.

We mostly code in Ruby on Rails 4, Bootstrap, Sass, CoffeeScript, JavaScript, CSS3, HTML5 and test code using RSpec, Capybara, and Mocha. We work closely with our hosting provider so knowledge of Chef, Redis, MySQL, and NginX is a plus.

    • 3-5 years professional experience working with Ruby on Rails or equivalent experience in object oriented languages such as Java, Python, C# or PHP and demonstrated willingness to learn Ruby.
  • Interpersonal skills to collaborate closely with cross-functional team and to communicate with executive sponsors

  • Experience with Agile Extreme Programming (XP) development and Scrum lifecycle practices, or a strong desire to learn including: agile product teams, test driven development, continuous integration, iterative delivery, retrospection

  • Ability to work on-site in Midtown Manhattan

  • Good understanding of front-end technologies, such as JavaScript, HTML5, and CSS3.

  • Familiarity with concepts of MVC, Mocking, ORM, and RESTful.

  • Experience implementing responsive designs using an existing frameworks or pure CSS.

  • Proficient understanding of code versioning tools, such as Git.

    • A knack for writing clean, readable and maintainable Ruby code.

Other Experience

  • Experience with libraries such as Redis, Rspec, Mocha, Capybara.

  • Experience with optimizing MySQL databases; NoSQL and/or PostgreSQL a plus.

  • Experience with Resque or other background job frameworks.

  • Familiarity with ONIX for Books to communicate book information in electronic form.

  • Familiarity with development aiding tools, such as Bundler, Rake.

  • Ability to integrate multiple data sources and databases into one system.

  • Ability to implement automated testing platforms and unit tests.

  • Familiarity with pair programming.

As a Developer, this person will work on a number of initiatives to improve and develop the analytics capabilities in all areas of the bank. This person will work on cross divisional project teams with members of EDCI (Enterprise Data & Client Insights), Enterprise Risk, Treasury, Financial Planning & Analysis teams, Information Services, and Data Management teams. Responsibilities * The ideal candidate has a broad skillset in areas like statistics, math, computing, and quantitative modeling. * Background or experience in finance, business analysis, or financial engineering is a plus, but not required as long as the candidate possesses a strong curiosity for and ability to quickly learn and assimilate new skills as needed. * Candidates must have an attitude of getting things done and delivering results while keeping long terms goals and objectives in mind. * To supplement these sophisticated analytical capabilities, candidates need to have solid business acumen and executive-level communication. * Working with the management analytics team in assisting senior level management in a range of activities including various data analysis projects, strategic planning, data profiling initiatives, application development and vendor evaluation, Executive Management and Board of Directors Reports and presentations, and other analytics activities as needed. * As part of a longer term team project the analyst will participate in envisioning, designing, planning, and building in-house analytics platforms and interfaces. Qualifications * A bachelor's degree and 2-5 years of related work experience; or a graduate degree and approximately 3 years of related work experience. * A degree in computer science, engineering, or mathematics with a minor in economics, finance or a related field; MBA or MS degree a plus. * A minimum 2+ years of relevant corporate work experience working on programming, data analytics, quantitative modeling. * Banking experience is a plus but a candidate that can clearly articulate the transferability of out of industry skills will be considered. * Ability to work effectively in both a team environment and independently, both with internal and external (partner) resources. * Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. * Programming skills in prototyping languages like python. * Statistical skills and experience with languages like R. * Ability to work with large databases and devising queries using SQL. * Experience in front-end development and JavaScript is a plus. * An understanding of the data used and the associated inherent issues in Commercial Banking, Retail Banking, or Asset Management would be a plus. * Strong knowledge of and experience in executing all phases of the technology life cycle, based on proven project management and testing methodologies.
