Detroit Free Press, part of Gannett Co., Inc. and the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking a champion baseball writer to cover the Detroit Tigers in America's comeback city.

The Free Press boasts a robust baseball audience that craves thoughtful, authoritative analysis. The ideal candidate will write with voice and impact to examine the Tigers and their rebuild from 30,000 feet and deliver definitive storytelling and enterprise to a national stage.

The writer must have the reporting chops and stamina to be the expert on the Tigers and is someone who can contextualize major trends in Major League Baseball quickly and effectively for the Free Press and USA TODAY Sports Network, which includes more than 250 properties nationwide. The candidate also must be acclimated to the grind of a 162-game schedule. MLB beat experience is preferred; a track record for breaking news and developing strong sources are required. There is no ambition too big for this role.

The writer will play a vital role within a dynamic sports news-gathering operation in America's greatest sports town. We are looking for someone who is digitally savvy, raring to make our coverage better and wants to be part of a winning team.


  • Bachelor's in Communication, Journalism, or equivalent experience and education.

  • At least 3 years MLB reporting experience.

  • Proficiency building a brand on social media.

  • Effective communicator; able to get along with diverse personalities.

  • Able to multitask and excel under intense deadline pressure in a rapidly changing industry.

  • Knows how to use time efficiently in a 24-hour newsroom.

  • Works collaboratively within a cross-functional environment.

  • Deep understanding of and curiosity about competition for our customers' time and money.

  • Self-motivation and self-direction.

  • Applies innovative, creative thinking to support Free Press goals.

  • Writing, spelling, grammar, AP and local style.

  • Command of media law and Principles of Ethical Conduct.

  • Valid driver's license required.

VIEW JOBS 2/27/2020 12:00:00 AM 2020-05-27T00:00 Job Description JOB SUMMARY: The Detroit Tigers are looking to add a part-time creative, energetic and dedicated "PAWS" mascot performer to the Promotions, Special Events and Entertainment team. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Perform as the Tigers official mascot "PAWS" at community events and Detroit Tigers home games. Tasks include: * Community Events performances: Parades, Little League Opening Days, School Assemblies, Corporate Gatherings, Birthday Parties, and other special appearance requests. Community appearances require performer to interact with Tiger fans of all ages – Posing for pictures, dancing, and performing humorous skits. * Detroit Tigers home games: Welcoming fans to Comerica Park. Initiating chants, claps, and cheers to get the crowd excited during key baseball moments. Also participate in pre-game ceremonies, between inning giveaways, and 7th inning stretch. * Preparation: Work with the Promotions Staff (including the Tigers Energy Squad) to design, develop and implement mascot-related promotional activities that are fun, interactive, and entertaining. * Assist the Detroit Tigers Front Office on administrative duties such as creating a monthly availability schedule for community appearance. * Maintain cleanliness and groomed appearance of "PAWS" costumes. MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: * The ideal candidate must have significant experience performing in front of large crowds. * Creativity, dancing ability, consistency and an ability to communicate through body language are extremely important, as is an outgoing & creative personality. * Candidate must have physical stamina to perform and remain on their feet for at least an hour at a time in all types of environments: Indoor, outdoor, cold, hot. * In addition to weekdays, candidate must be available to work most weekends and holidays. * Prior mascot related experience (Collegiate or professional) is required. * Some previous customer service experience is preferred.
