Detail Design Engineer
Purpose:
Steel America, a division of Colonna's Shipyard, is seeking a Detail Design Engineer to support division operations in Norfolk, VA.
The Detail Design Engineer will transform conceptual designs into precise actionable blueprints. This position involves creating detailed engineering drawings, 3D models, and technical specifications that guide the fabrication and machining processes. The engineer collaborates closely with project managers, production teams, and clients to ensure that designs meet rigorous industry standards, adhere to safety regulations, and align with project requirements. Responsibilities include performing complex calculations, creating parts lists, and specifying tolerances to ensure the structural integrity and functionality of the final product. Additionally, the Detail Design Engineer is responsible for troubleshooting design issues, providing technical support during the manufacturing phase, and continuously improving design practices to enhance efficiency and quality in production.
Job Description:
Prepare mean and method drawings detailing construction methods, work sequences, temporary work, formwork, and lifting operations.
Integrate quality and safety measures in execution methods and sequence drawings to prevent risk.
Develop concepts, performance criteria, and production standards.
Produce final detailed drawings, specifications, and parts lists.
Create samples of working models for demonstration.
Negotiate appropriate production processes.
Improve usability of items by applying computer-aided design (CAD) to design concepts.
Stay current and up-to-date on new technology and design processes.
Report on detailing progress, and maintain project records through the creation and management of a document transmittal and recording system.
Distribute drawings for review, integrate feedback, and issue revised drawings.
Prepare drawings or computer models that include multiple views, detail drawings, and assembly drawings
Prepare the project shop-drawings, cutting list, installation-detail drawings, effect revisions and changes to same over the project duration using AutoCAD
Work from sketches, computer models, and verbal information supplied by an engineer, architect, or designer to determine the most appropriate views, detail drawings, and supplementary information needed to complete assignments
Directly support the Project Managers and Engineers and Planning Departments in which work is being Designed for.
To prepare submissions of specific shop drawings to Client/Project Manager as required
Develop and implement processes, procedures and standards for design department
Perform structural analysis and design for assigned projects in compliance with applicable codes for review
Prepare structural approval drawings, shop fabrication drawings and erection drawings including, material lists and shipping forms
Communicate and coordinate with other disciplines including mechanical and electrical, internal project management, purchasing and manufacturing departments to provide accurate structural approval and detailed production drawings to ensure their requirements are incorporated in the structural drawings
Provide assistance in the development and maintenance of standard structural practices for drafting and fabrication of structures
Attend coordination/review meetings and assist on design and details and approval of the same
Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Must have bachelor's or associate's degree and 2-4 years of relevant design experience in marine new construction or steel fabrication. Ship repair experience a plus.
Must have direct experience preparing detailed plans, drawings, and other documents for the manufacture and erection of steel components.
Must be well versed in all technical aspects of structural steel detailing.
Must have expertise on formwork, work sequences, and construction method drawings.
Must have experience with AutoCad or SolidWorks.
Must have experience with 3D modeling for infrastructure.
Must maintain regular attendance and work independently, sometimes under pressure, to meet deadlines.
Must have strong verbal and written communication skills
Must have strong mathematical skill and ability.
Must be proficient in all Microsoft 365 products and Microsoft Project.

Physical Requirements:
Sit, Stand, Walk, Bend, Squat, Climb, Reach, Push and Pull, Stoop, Crawl, Kneel, Balance, Lift and Carry various objects and equipment.
General shipyard/industrial environment. Work is has physical demands that require frequent movement up to 65% of the time.
Lighting and temperature are adequate, and there is minimal exposure to hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. Hear, talk, and smell.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work is generally performed within an office environment, with standard office equipment available, but also requires safe navigation and regular partnership with operations teams within shipyard/industrial environments.
A considerable amount of time is spent operating a personal computer.
Must be able to climb up and down stairs and spend time moving throughout the facility and onboard marine vessels.
