Summary of Major Responsibilities

The Desktop Support Engineer is responsible for responding to operational break/fix scenarios, as well as upgrading and maintaining end user devices through regular refresh intervals and projects requiring new equipment. Working with other technical resources, the Desktop Support Engineer adheres to procedures, workflows, and tools to provide exceptional support and customer service.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides support to end users for computer, software, system, device, or access needs via phone, email, or in-person support

  • Build and deploy new laptops and desktops

  • Configure desk phones and setup phone agents

  • Track and maintain inventory of end user equipment

  • Support user moves including equipment relocation and setup

  • Provide updates on the progress of project tasks

  • Document and troubleshoot end user incidents in adherence with service level targets for response and resolution

  • Participate in Information Technology and cross functional team projects as a key resource for deploying end user devices, including computers, phones and printers

  • Research and recommend new technologies to support business requirements and enhance the service catalog

  • Participate in Information Technology and cross functional team projects as a key resource for deploying, maintaining, and upgrading end user devices

  • Provide updates on the progress of project tasks

  • Uphold company mission and values through accountability, innovation, integrity, quality, and teamwork

  • Support and comply with the company's Quality Management System policies and procedures

  • Regular and reliable attendance

  • Ability to work nights and/or weekends

  • Ability to work designated work scheduled

  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds for approximately 25% of a typical working day

  • Ability to comply with any applicable personal protective equipment requirements

  • Ability and means to travel between Madison locations


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, MIS, or related field; or high school degree/general education diploma and 4+ years of relevant experience in lieu of degree

  • 6+ months of experience in a technical support role

  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship

  • Demonstrated ability to perform the Essential Duties of the position with or without accommodation

Preferred Qualifications

  • ITIL training and certification

  • Microsoft SCCM and Windows 10 expertise

  • 1+ years of experience using ServiceNow for IT Service Management

  • 1+ years of experience supporting remote employees

  • 1+ years of experience in health care or biotechnology

The primary work location will be the 610 Walnut Street.</em></p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The Administrative Information Management Services (AIMS) is a part of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and has a customer base that consists of approximately 2,500 workstations and users who are primarily running Windows 7 and Windows 10 in a Microsoft environment.Our users are distributed across campus on local networks which are protected by firewalls that AIMS manages.Users run typical administrative type software such as the Microsoft Office 365, Adobe Creative Cloud, Chrome, etc.We are looking for temporary help for at least one year to assist with desktop lifecycle management processes while a service consolidation project is completed.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Under the general supervision of the Field Services unit within the AIMS division, this position will work closely with team leads to: </p><p>(1)Assist with replacing users&rsquo; end of life workstations with new ones utilizing our imaging and build processes and tools<br /></p><p>(2)Assist with upgrading workstations from Windows 7 to Windows 10</p><p>(3)Provide user support and administration of customer&rsquo;s workstations when not engaged in the activities listed in 1 and 2 above</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The first two activities will occur in locations around campus.The user support activities will occur at the WARF building at 610 Walnut Street primarily via remote tools however travel to customer&rsquo;s locations around campus may be required. AIMS has a fleet of vehicles for travel to customer sites if necessary.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Our toolset includes:</p><p>-Altiris for desktop and operating system patching and application management</p><p>-An incident/service request call management tool (Applix)</p><p>-Active Directory and Group Policy </p><p>-Various remote desktop management tools</p><p>-Inventory management system (locally built)</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Provides technical support in a higher education environment, specifically focusing on computer life cycle management (e.g. end of life hardware replacements). This role will receive directions from the Field Services manager and work as part of a larger IT support team. This role requires self-motivation and the ability to work independently or as part of a larger team.<br /><br />List of some of the Qualifications/Skill Requirements:<br /><br />* Demonstrated technical competence in a customer support environment<br /><br />* General analytical and troubleshooting procedures needed to help users<br /><br />* Experience with help desk call tracking and incident management applications and concepts<br /><br />* Experience provisioning workstations using an endpoint management tool such as Altiris, SCCM, BigFix, etc.<br /><br />* Experience supporting workstation hardware, particularly Dell computers and HP printers and scanners<br /><br />* Installation, configuration, and support of Windows 7 and Windows 10<br /><br />* Experience upgrading workstations from Windows 7 to Windows 10<br /><br />* Experience providing customer support through the use of remote desktop management software<br /><br />* Experience supporting Microsoft Office 365 and Adobe Creative Cloud applications.<br /><br />* Must pass UW Madison&rsquo;s Risk Management application process to obtain authorization to operate UW Madison&rsquo;s fleet vehicles.
