About the

Position:

The Civil Engineer reportsto the Civil Engineering Manager in PED and will support internal and externalteam members collaborating on new projects and improvements to our existing fleetof steam and combustion turbine units on Long Island. This position is responsible to research,develop and implement new civil and structural projects that capitalize on theevolving energy market in New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The person in this role is responsible toassess and implement improvements to the existing steam and combustion turbineunits as part of the capital improvement and maintenance projects related toCivil Engineering Structures. Thisposition is responsible to perform technical and financial evaluations of newand existing assets. Project assessmentsshall include, but are not limited to, different design options, alternatives,cost/benefit analysis, risk analysis and project performance evaluations. This position will include project engineer,project design and project manager responsibilities. The engineer will evaluate all aspects ofproject design, procurement, construction, commissioning and operations onprojects. This role is responsible to develop drawings, specifications,standards and procedures on projects. Thisposition is an essential contributor to our goal of asset management andtechnology modernization.

Position Responsibilities(including but not limited to):

  • Reports to the Civil Engineering Manager of the Power Plant Operations Power Engineering Dept.

  • Work closely with plant staffs and engineers to establish equipment locations, support structures, physical designs and civil requirements to support plant maintenance and operations.

  • Serve as the project engineer during the design, construction and operation of projects on existing generating assets and new energy development opportunities.

  • Provide technical support and troubleshooting on field installations

  • Provide technical evaluations of new energy development projects for energy storage, solar and combustion turbines, as related to civil works.

  • Evaluate new and emerging technologies for application in new projects and existing assets.

  • Provide guidance to PPO personnel, vendors, internal and external partners on project requirements.

  • Provide effective communication with PPO personnel, partners, vendors, internal and external stakeholders on projects to promote the effective implementation of projects.

  • Serve as the technical consultant throughout project development, construction, commissioning and operation on existing generating assets.

  • Perform engineering calculations in accordance with latest codes and industry standards.

  • Develop studies to support project scope.

  • Develop specifications, standards and procedures for projects.

  • Develop man-hour, material and service cost estimates.

  • Develop cost benefit analysis and risk assessment on projects.

  • Prepare and review detailed civil design and show detail drawings in AutoCAD.

  • Prepare computerized models of structures (STAAD).

  • Assemble civil drawing work packages and prepare transmittal documents.

  • Perform field surveys to support design development and as-built conditions.

  • Interface with civil engineers, other engineering disciplines, designers, plant staffs, support services organizations and contractors.

  • Recognizing and mitigating hazards.

Knowledge and

Experience Required:

  • 1-10 years of related power plant civil or equivalent experience.

  • Experience inspecting civil and structural installation work.

  • Experience working with other engineering disciplines.

  • Experience with AutoCAD

  • Experience with structural modeling programs.

  • Familiar with civil and structural codes such as AISC Steel Construction Manual and ACI 318 Code.

  • Experience with power generating equipment and support systems.

  • Experience in project management, construction and commissioning preferred.

  • Experience in project cost/benefit and risk analysis.

OtherQualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering is required. Advanced credentials preferred.

  • NYS Intern Engineer Certification or Professional Engineer License preferred.

  • Energetic, creative and committed to promoting innovative ideas and achieving or exceeding objectives.

  • Self-starter who is comfortable leading and managing project teams.

  • Able to engage and lead others to successful results on projects.

  • Analytical and solution based thinking necessary.

  • Work independently and collaboratively on multiple projects, including high visibility initiatives.

  • Comfortable with ambiguity and change.

  • Capable of working in a matrix organization and achieve results.

  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel, Outlook and Power Point applications.

  • Effective verbal and written skills.

  • Capable of working in a power plant environment

  • Capable of recognizing hazards, learning and implementing safeguards.

  • Valid NYS Driver's License

Position Description: As the Underground Transmission Engineer, you will perform engineering and design to ensure successful completion of large-scale underground electric transmission projects. (The successful candidate will report to our Hicksville, NY office and will be assigned primarily to projects on the East End of Long Island). Duties include (but not limited to): * Provide construction and project management assistance with underground transmission projects. * Provide technical expertise and support to Operations, Project Management, Planning, Customer Services Departments, and external customers in support of the LIPA underground transmission system. * Evaluate the application and use of materials, equipment and new technologies on the LIPA underground transmission system. * Develop and evaluate the design of electric transmission systems and related facilities based upon reliability and economy with consideration to operation, safety and maintenance requirements. * Develop material, engineering design, construction specifications/associated drawings, and standards as required for successful completion of assigned transmission projects. * Develop, review and revise standards as a result of recommendations by industry associations (e.g. IEEE, EEI, ANSI, etc.) related to state of the art materials and engineering/operating methods. Participate in R&D initiatives, evaluate and procure new materials/equipment to improve performance of the electric transmission system. * Work with internal and external organizations/customers to ensure prudent engineering solutions are undertaken to special engineering and construction projects. * Perform budget/project cost estimates, special engineering studies, investigations and calculations as required. Education and Qualifications: REQUIRED * Bachelor's degree in Engineering. * Knowledge of engineering design and analysis. * Progressive engineering and construction related work experience (4+ years of experience required to be considered for Staff Engineer / 6+ years expereince required to be considered for Principal Staff Engineer-Technical). * Willing to travel to locations assigned primarily east end of Long Island * This position requires driving to company locations and off-site assignments and events, applicants must possess a valid driver's license with a safe and satisfactory driver history. DESIRED: * Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering * A New York State Professional Engineering license is desirable. * Knowledge of engineering design and analysis of underground electric transmission systems including 23-345 KV pipe type cable and solid dielectric cable systems. * Knowledge of AutoCAD and TeamCenter Enterprise. * Knowledge of the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), National Electrical Code (NEC) and other related guidelines related to electric transmission system engineering, design and operation.
