Responsibilities & Qualifications of a Designer:

At the direction of the Project Manager, uses CAD software and available tools for the timely preparation of designs for civil grading, utility, horizontal control, and various other plans at all project milestones. Selects and adapts pertinent details and notations; identifies and creates proper sections and profiles for project constructability. Directs CAD Technicians on the presentation, preparation and accuracy of plans representing these designs.

Organizes projects and files using Epic standards, checklists, structures, and procedures; ensures CAD Technician do the same. Collaborates with and guides various committees and trainings to review, update, and present these protocols for effectiveness.

Directs the processing, reconciliation, and/or creation of accurate linework base files for internal use and distribution to clients, consultants, and contractors.

Creates or directs the creation of exhibits for coordination between clients and consultants.

At the direction of the Project Manager, collaborates with the project consultant team to present and address each other’s design criteria and constraints. Clearly and regularly communicates these to the client and consultants to minimize revisions near the time of submittal. Builds relationships with consultants’ design staff and learns to negotiate scoping and design strategies.

Collaborates with product vendors and their design staff to arrive at effective solutions to complicated aspects of projects beyond typical conditions. Coordinates these solutions with the PM for implementation into the project.

Attends project meetings and site visits as directed by the Project Manager.

Coordinates with agencies for compliance with their design standards. Completes applications and prepares submittal packages for review through the entire agency approval process.

At the discretion of the Project Manager, directs the CAD Technician on the review of product submittals during construction. Coordinates with the Project Manager to address RFIs and directs CAD Technicians on revisions needed for response.

Level 1:

KNOWLEDGE: Applies & implements company policies & procedures, tools, and checklists for the design of plans for submission to clients and agencies. Reviews & modifies project specifications for approval.

JOB COMPLEXITY: Works within the defined scope as directed by the Project Manager. Follows company policies & procedures in carrying out a sequence of related design tasks. Collaborates with internal and external contacts for general designs. Directs work for CAD Technicians under the supervision of the Project Manager. Participates in various committees and trainings to help keep the company at the forefront of the industry.

SUPERVISION: Works with general instructions from the Project Manager, exercising sound judgment to determine appropriate methods for completing designs.

EXPERIENCE: Typically requires a minimum of 3-5 years of related experience and technical school training.

Level 2:

KNOWLEDGE: As an experienced designer, uses professional concepts in developing resolution to complex issues and broad design matters. Collaborates with the Project Manager to develop the project BOD (Basis of Design).

JOB COMPLEXITY: Works on designs of diverse scope, exercising broad judgment in the application of company policies & procedures. Collaborates with internal and external contacts on all aspects of design. Directs CAD Techs on general design matters and delegates limited design in a learning environment. Participates in and guides various committees and trainings to help keep the company Engineers at the forefront of the industry.

SUPERVISION: Works without specific instructions, exercising broad judgment to determine appropriate methods for completing designs.

EXPERIENCE: Typically requires 5-8 years of related experience.

Level 3, Senior Designer:

KNOWLEDGE: Possessesa full understanding of design concepts and company policies and procedures. Exercises independent judgment in design approaches to complex issues and broad design matters.

JOB COMPLEXITY: Works on designs of complex scope, exercising independent judgment in the application of company policies & procedures. Directs CAD Techs on all design matters and prepares them for advancement to Designer. Contributes to the development of company objectives by participating in and guiding various committees and trainings. Learns to understand the Project Manager role by aiding the PM in their duties.

SUPERVISION: Acts independently to determine design methods.

EXPERIENCE: Typically requires a minimum of 8-10 years of related experience. Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering is recommended.
