Design Research Manager, Spend Arena

We're the Spend Design team. What's a credit card if not the easiest, most rewarding way to make purchases throughout your day? We focus on experiences that empower our customers to spend anytime, anywhere - no matter what life may throw at them. We focus on empowering our users to spend frictionlessly, recover from unforeseen disruptions effortlessly, and deliver spend-based insight they can't get anywhere else. We're looking for a Design Research Manager to help design, lead, and conduct qualitative and quantitative user research for key initiatives at every stage of the product life-cycle that will help lead CreditWise into the future. You'll need to be pretty dang good at doing these types of things:

  • Guide teams to translate business problems into human-centered problems

  • Be creative in the methods employed to spark an empathic understanding of users' needs

  • Align product experiences to the broader Capital One ecosystem

  • Design and conduct a range of formative and iterative research methods applicable to all product stages from conception to release

  • Develop comprehensive research strategies to drive qualitative and quantitative insights data into decisions across the product and experience lifecycle

  • Triangulate multiple data sources into integrated insights

  • Practice and help evolve the team's research techniques and toolset to work effectively within a rapid product and experience development cadence

  • Collaborate closely with design, engineering, and business partners during all steps of research

  • Have a track record of leading teams of various stakeholders - including designers, researchers, strategists, product managers, and tech partners

  • Understand the difference between Design Research & Market Research and have experience collaborating on initiatives between these teams

  • Translate research findings into actionable recommendations and deliver them in compelling ways

  • Communicate and evangelize research results to design, business, and technology teams and upper management

  • Influence leadership with a persuasive insight-driven stance on difficult user experience and business issues

  • As a research manager, demonstrate leadership and passion in all the above points

Basic Qualifications:

  • At least 7 years of professional experience with user experience design

  • At least 5 years of professional experience with user testing and evaluative research

  • At least 3 years of experience managing other designers

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of professional experience with user experience design, user testing, and evaluative research

  • 8+ years of experience designing for omni-channel services

  • 4+ years of usability testing and user experience research within a lab environment

  • 4+ years of experience managing other designers

This position reports to the Portfolio Director (Health) Biomedical Innovation Research, Regulation and Ethics. A successful candidate will be a thought leader responsible for developing relationships and launching impactful work to further NIH and other HHS agency missions. A successful candidate will work closely with portfolio, program and technical center teams to carry out the responsibilities described below. This is a leadership position in the Health FFRDC (Federally Funded Research and Development Center) -- a highly collaborative, dynamic, fast-growing organization that performs close-to-inherently governmental work, and measures success in terms of HHS mission impact. Strategy - Works with leaders from MITRE, NIH, and other federal leaders to form government strategies to achieve agency outcomes. Works with the portfolio management team to define and execute the FFRDC strategies for achieving those outcomes. Develop and maintain a thorough and up-to-date understanding of the sponsor's mission, their organization, and the political, economic, and technical environment that impacts the customer's organization and mission. Maintain a current assessment of the sponsor value profile and its relationship to MITRE's work program value to the sponsor. Develop and maintain a sponsor strategic analysis that is focused on sponsor strategic outcomes. Sponsor Engagement - Proactively engages with FFRDC sponsors on the realization of their outcomes. Provides FFRDC sponsors with insightful, fact-based, unbiased advice on the realization of those outcomes, with or without FFRDC tasking. Builds partnerships within HHS, other federal agencies, and between the Government and industry, academia, etc. Proactively and deliberately engage with sponsors, customers, and stakeholders, providing thought leadership to advise and help shape mission goals. Develop supporting relationships across the Department components with key sponsor contacts to ensure work program alignment that contributes to the sponsor's success. Ensure that engagements with sponsors and stakeholders are planned, coordinated, and communicated appropriately. Analysis - Applies a thorough understanding of NIH and other HHS organizations, missions, and capabilities to identify opportunities, risks, and trends. Brings the analysis of colleagues to bear on needs of the FFRDC, sponsors, or prospective sponsors/customers. As part of the FFRDC management team, ensures analysis done in the FFRDC is insightful, well founded, and persuasive. Pipeline and Work Integration – Identifies and shapes opportunities in partnership with MITRE and partner teams (Alliance, program division, and technical centers). Accurately forecasts and maintains records of relevant pipelines to include Start Date, Value, Capability Demand, Partner Engagement, overall Period of Performance, and outcome alignment. Ensures the FFRDC program and project level work is aligned to the needs of the FFRDC sponsors. Defines the work so that it achieves agency level outcomes and appropriately applies the FFRDC to those outcomes. Directs or oversees MITRE work done in support of agency outcomes. The selected candidate will be accountable for the NIH value analysis, work program value analysis, and portfolio strategy development, updating these analyses regularly to ensure that they are current and accurate. The selected candidate will also be accountable for developing and executing, in conjunction with the FFRDC leadership team, program and technical centers, a successful work program that supports their sponsor's objectives and achieves agreed upon outcomes. Preferred Qualifications: * Ability to work with interdisciplinary teams. * Ability to juggle multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment. * Experience serving as a trusted advisor to senior leaders at the NIH and other related agencies. * PhD, DSc, MD, JD, MPH, MPA or similar degree from a competitive academic program in a relevant field. Required Qualifications: * 15 years or more of health innovation research experience including 2 years of leadership experience. * At least 5 to 10 years' experience supporting the NIH and/or providing leadership to related state/local/international programming. * Familiarity with broader Health and Human Services and aligned other government programs and strategic priorities is also desirable to help facilitate cross-fertilization across the Health FFRDC portfolios and work program activities. * Excellent written and oral communication skills. * Passionate about improving health innovation research and the biomedical innovation pipeline. * The ability to develop working relationships within MITRE across all levels of staff, management and executives to leverage the Corporation's deep experience across a broad set of domains.
