The Design Research Intern will work on a growing User Experience (UX) Design team, comprising researchers, strategists, service designers, and product designers; our team works with a mix of internal stakeholders, from product owners and developers, to marketers and service providers, helping to unearth and define opportunity areas and arrive at solutions informed by research. We work to ensure we're solving the right problems, and then rapidly iterate and test a variety of concepts and materials with oncologists, pathologists, advanced practitioners, clinical care teams, patients, caregivers, and scientific investigators.


We're looking for a social scientist, strategist, or human-centered designer who is keen to dive into design research projects and support our team's research operations and activities. A main area of focus will be collaborating with team members to iterate upon our customer-facing products, with opportunities to improve the experience our colleagues have with our internal applications as well.

Specifically, this person will:

  • Work with various research, strategy, and design team members to support their project efforts.

  • Take on two to three individual projects to enhance user experiences with specific products and services.

  • Support various ongoing Research Operations-related initiatives.

  • Conduct secondary research and competitive reviews.

  • Shadow research sessions and observe different methods and processes.

  • Conduct sessions with a collaborator, to gain experience in the practice of design research.

  • Contribute to all aspects of the research process, from problem definition and methods selection, to research prep and data collection, to analysis, synthesis, and creation of insights and design recommendations.

  • Help document and coordinate the sharing of research insights across the company and contribute to our burgeoning knowledge management system.

The ideal candidate is an empathetic champion of human-centered design and insights; a thoughtful researcher with exposure to different research methods; a proactive and diligent team member; a driven and curious problem-framer and creative problem-solver; and, a dynamic communicator and collaborator, looking to make a difference in a mission-driven healthcare context.


  • A degree in the social sciences, human-computer interaction, human-centered design, service design, business, or design management.

  • Familiarity with a mix of quantitative and qualitative research methods.

  • Direct experience interviewing and observing others for the purposes of social scientific or human-centered design work.

  • Experience recruiting participants and planning for research work.

  • Familiarity working with cross-disciplinary product teams.

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Experience working with designers and developers.

  • Experience working in healthcare with awareness of inherent challenges.

  • Working toward an advanced degree in the social sciences, design, or business.

Responsibilities Guided by the user-centered design process, you'll participate in both qualitative and quantitative user research activities like card sorting, contextual interviews, first-click testing, focus groups, heuristic evaluations, personas, surveys, task analysis, use cases, usability testing, and design thinking. In your role, you will: * Assist in the planning of user research. * Recruit and schedule research participants. * Play the roles of greeter and note-taker during usability test sessions. * Join the team in collaborative activities like field research and design thinking. * Assist in analyzing data and prepare reports from user research activities. * Participate in presenting findings and make recommendations that support evidence-based decision making by our design, business, and technology partners. Qualifications Candidates should be pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree related to human computer interaction, human factors, psychology, information design, user experience design, product design, or related field. Experience with tools like dscout, Loop11, InVision, Adobe Experience Design, Origami Studio, Sketch, or Axure is a plus.
