The Design Project Manager is responsible for the delivery of effective design project management services. The projects have a high level of complexity and can be high profile and have a greater impact on the operations of the institution. May be multi-phased with multiple contracts; project team may include staff from several disciplines and/or departments as well as specialty consultants. Project durations can be as 3-5 years.

This position is eligible for hybrid work within Iowa and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of your employment. Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually, and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location.

Duties to Include:

  • Manage the design process from Pre-Design Services through the Bidding

  • Ensure project design is in compliance with current codes, University design standards and industry standards

  • Prepare and negotiate design professional services agreement and amendments (scope, fee and schedule)

  • Establish, monitor, and update project schedule

  • Develop and monitor budgets

  • Manage conflicts between delivering institutional objectives and project team member isolated interests

  • Plans, estimates, organizes and monitors projects.

Location: University Services Building (USB)

Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm

Design & Construction takes an integrated and sustainable approach to the long-term planning and management of the University of Iowa's land, buildings, and historic resources. We facilitate and support decision making processes of Senior Administration and the Board of Regents in these areas.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Professional experience (typically 3-5 years) in project management of projects during programming, schematic design, design development and/or construction document phases.

  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and problem-solving skills.

  • Proficient in computer software applications.

  • Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in architecture, engineering or a related field or an equivalent combination of related education and experience.

  • Extensive experience in a customer focused, team-oriented environment.

  • Professional experience (typically 3-5 years) in project management of projects during programming, schematic design, design development and/or construction document phases on a university campus.

  • Extensive experience with project management software such as BlueBeam, Microsoft Projects, etc.

  • Experience in sustainable design processes, laboratory and/or MEPT capital improvement projects and/or state building inspection procedures.
