Design Learning Coach: Inquiry & Design Department

The Wheeler School, a co-ed, N-12 independent day school with city and farm campuses serving approximately 800 students in the Greater Providence and Greater Boston areas, is seeking a Design Learning Coach to join our Inquiry & Design Department.

Ideal candidates for faculty and staff positions at Wheeler are people with a sense of humor, warmth, and humility. They are excellent communicators, with empathy for others and an ability to listen and respond with good intuition and with the help of colleagues. They are ambitious and hard-working, committed to supporting students by offering help and creating new opportunities. When developing curriculum and programming, our faculty and staff members are curious, striving each year to stretch and grow, to implement new ideas that improve the Wheeler experience. In the end, they love to spend their days with young people and enjoy all that the Wheeler community - creative, energetic, dynamic, and diverse - has to offer.

We are looking for candidates with experience in inquiry- and/or design-based teaching, especially in the intersection of these fields with engineering and the arts. Ideal candidates should have an entrepreneurial spirit as well as a track record of collaboration. The Design Learning Coach will be a member of the Inquiry & Design Department, the newest of Wheeler's academic departments. The I&D Department is also one of Wheeler's horizontal, integrative, service-oriented academic departments (the others being our Library, Unity & Diversity, Technology, and Health departments). As such, department members are expected to assist colleagues in developing their curricula when appropriate. The Design Learning Coach is expected to work with students from all divisions, but their primary affiliation will be with one division as each individual will have specific advisory responsibilities and will be a member of a grade-level team.

Preference goes to candidates who have a track record of:

  • Making experience, preferably multi-media, and experience teaching fabrication methods, preferable to a wide age range of students;

  • Experience with programs/classes emphasizing the importance of process and product;

  • Promoting to a variety of constituencies design-teaching and learning;

  • Creating a positive and safe studio environment;

  • Understanding that the vitality of any studio space correlates positively to teaching skills such as collaboration, communication, creative capacities, and critical thinking; and,

  • Interacting with teachers showing them the interdisciplinary benefits of design teaching and learning.

Teaching/Advising Responsibilities (to be adjusted according to the experience set of the colleague)

  • 3 Design Seminars

  • US Electives - scheduled around teaching commitments. Involves mentoring and guiding student projects.

  • US Advising/WheeLS Hub Leader

  • Running, scheduling, and maintaining the Wheeler Inquiry & Design Space

  • Developing programming for use of the Design Shop through collaborative efforts with members of the Upper School
    Participating in the life of the school, including various constituencies the benefits of design teaching and learning.

  • Head of Upper School
  • Direct Supervisor
  • Head of Strategic Innovation
  • Administrative support and facilitation
