Design Engineer

Specialties include OSP/ISP engineering, design, permitting, right-of-way, and CAD for traditional and wireless telecommunications companies. Job Description The Make Ready Engineer is responsible for make-ready work associated with new fiber network builds, to include: dark fiber, enterprise, E-Rate, and fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) projects.

Common scope of work would involve fiber installation assessments, coordination with pole owners, permitting, right-of-way, and related tasks to facilitate proper design and construction work. Given the geographic scope of responsibilities, the incumbent will need to occasionally travel to areas where construction activity is ongoing. Duties & Responsibilities Learning, understanding, and application of the National Electric Safety Code (NESC) standards for wire attachments spacing regulations on a power/telephone pole, and in the midspans Production of analyzing existing and proposed attachments to power/telephone poles for Make Ready Engineering (MRE) and pole loading analysis (PLA) Maintains project production needs for detailing Pole Data Reports by analyzing mathematically and judiciously approaching a new “proposed” communication attachment Data entry of mathematical analysis for wire attachments into set and standardized spreadsheets Critically assessing whether fiber optic routing should remain aerial or underground for a design team, using proprietary company knowledge Maintain good communication with employees and managers to assure timely and efficient completion of jobs, proper communication of issues, and proper documentation of the entire process Working closely with a design team to coordinate pole application permits and communicate the need for design changes per pole analyses Qualifications: •Ability to identify existing voice/data plant, electric, and other utilities on the site plans as well as in the field •Ability to indicate existing voice/data plant location and relocate facilities and knowledge of obtaining right of ways and easements where required •Must have experience managing other OSP Engineers and reviewing/correcting their projects •Expert in obtaining right of ways and easements where required •Must be capable of engineering routine and specific COE/OSP work orders, including more complex projects including road moves •Must have an expert knowledge of COE/OSP principles, work order procedures, voice/data industry standards, PC applications, and COE/OSP record and/or computer aided drafting systems •Must have own tools such as a measuring wheel, height stock, pull finder, laptop, etc. •Experience with the local networks •Ability to perform quality control on engineering work for other members of the team •Experience/Understanding with the National Electric Safety Code (NESC) for engineering requirements.
