In the role of Mechanical Design Engineer

  • Brake Products, you will be responsible for performing engineering and analysis work associated with developing new brake drums and rotors and maintaining existing brake products per internal and external customer requirements. You will provide detailed analysis that is critical in guiding the design and development process. You will work individually and on cross-functional teams with engineers from wheel end Design, Test, and Applications Engineering groups to validate and release products for customer specific brake configurations.

This role requires working in an office environment (not hybrid or remote) at ConMet's corporate headquarters in Vancouver, Washington. Non-local candidates must be open to relocation (relocation assistance available).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop new brake drums and rotors and modify existing products per external and internal customer requirements. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Generate 3D models and 2D drawings with support from designers

  • Ensure compliance with customer inputs

  • Conduct, analyze, and summarize mechanical and thermal Finite Element Analysis (FEA)

  • Develop test plans and submit test requests for prototype validation

  • Determine appropriate tolerances, critical characteristics, GD&T, and material specifications

  • Create and maintain DFMEA and DVP&R

  • Incorporate design for manufacturing best practices, packaging, and plant feedback into designs

  • Provide project updates and document completed designs by conducting design reviews

  • Write, maintain, and update engineering design and test specifications

  • Root cause analysis and problem solving

  • Inspect and evaluate warranty returns. Write warranty evaluation reports and field investigation reports.

Education and Experience

Required:

  • B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering

  • Minimum 3 years of mechanical design engineering work experience

  • Proficiency with CAD 2D/3D modeling and drafting (Creo/ProE preferred)

  • Knowledge of mechanical design principles, finite element analysis (FEA), engineering documentation, statistical analysis, and quality systems

  • Understanding of ANSI Y14.5 drafting standards, GD&T, and tolerance stack-up analysis

  • Demonstrated presentation skills using Microsoft PowerPoint

  • Strong technical writing skills

Preferred:

  • Vehicle brake component and/or system design experience

  • Gray iron processing, iron foundry, and/or gray iron metallurgy experience

  • Knowledge of friction material composition and processing

  • Experience developing and maintaining quality documentation including DFMEAs and DVP&Rs

  • Commercial vehicle industry experience

Compensation & Benefits

  • New hires generally start between $74,567 - $106,525. The full salary range for the position, across all geographies is, $74,567 - $127,830 per year. The upper portion of the salary range is typically reserved for existing employees who demonstrate strong performance over time. Starting salary will vary by location, qualifications, and prior experience.

  • Targeted annual bonus is based on company performance to objectives during the fiscal plan year which runs from October 1 - September 30.
