In Summary

As the Industrial Design Director, your role will be to us creatively solve design problems for our brands. You will support the Head of Design and Strategy in managing large segments of our business while fostering creativity within the design team through new product & process development. This individual will need strong project management skills as they will be juggling priorities for multiple clients at once. In this role, you will help our team ensure that each brand's strategic vision solves a business problem, on budget, and on time while successfully navigating positive client relations and building a strong rapport. You will be responsible for helping to position our agency as a strategic and collaborative subject matter expert, while building new design prototypes for market research and design confirmation with an emphasis on consumer engagement.

Essential Responsibilities, Accountabilities & Results

Design Solutions & Strategy

  • Take client brief, consumer insights, strategic foundations and translate them into effective design

  • Partner with and leverage the Strategy, Engineering and Brand Identity teams to develop holistic solutions

  • Challenge project expectations, reframe initial problem and scrutinize project assumptions while showing sensitivity to the client's needs

Project Management

  • Develop organizational strategies with adjacent teams to maintain efficient and prolific project timelines

  • Work closely with Client Services to provide insight into project timing as it affects estimates and budgets

  • Optimize internal and external resources for efficiency, creativity and design quality

  • Continually improve design approaches, tools and methodologies to optimize utilization of resources and increase project profitability

Communication

  • Verbally convey ideas and design concepts to internal team members and clients, articulating and defending rationale behind designs

  • Demonstrate passionate and compelling presentation and storytelling skills

  • Provide constructive feedback and design critiques that are honest, direct, actionable and effective

  • Listen and understand your peers and clients

  • Align with the project leadership team before presenting work

Leadership

  • With our clients: Be a trusted expert, a collaborative partner and a seamless extension of the client's team. Demonstrate empathy for and prioritize the client's specific business objectives

  • With the Design Team: Mentor the team to foster best practices and improve design processes. Engage design team to keep them inspired, motivated and challenged throughout

  • With the sgsco: Grow the industrial design capabilities and strong standing within sgsco. Collaborate with pillar agencies to demonstrate industrial design capabilities to key client accounts

Growth & Development

  • Craft compelling client pitches and capability presentations that pair Webb deVlam's unique design approach to the client's specific business challenges

  • Identify and target new growth opportunities within existing clients' business units

  • Demonstrate thought leadership that demonstrates expertise in brand and product design experience

  • Demonstrate deep understanding of client's needs / and how we can deliver results against them

  • Leverage internal and external business opportunities to grow revenue for both the agency and collective

  • Foster local creative networks to identify and attract coveted fresh talent to Webb deVlam

Need to Haves:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design or related field . Master's degree preferred.

  • Minimum 8 years of experience in packaging or product design, preferably at a Director or Senior level

  • Expert understanding of product form language, ergonomics, user-centered design, design for manufacturability and product interaction

  • Well-rounded portfolio showcasing a deep understanding of SolidWorks, Keyshot, Cintiq+Sketchbook Pro, Analog sketching and Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator)

  • 5+ years of working with other functional areas such as engineering, production, and product marketing

  • Mastery of CAD design for complex surface models intended for engineering reviews

  • Comprehensive experience working with clients on brand and design strategy

  • Ability to efficiently present ideas elegantly and compellingly at every stage of development, from brainstorm sketches to CAD and photorealistic renderings.

  • Previous creation of a custom structure (such as a bottle) in a R&D atmosphere, preferred

  • Deep understanding of manufacturing processes like injection molding, blow molding, thermoforming, paper construction, and automation to guide creative solutions that are both beautiful and smart

  • Excellent conceptual thinking skills

  • Expert understanding of product form language, ergonomics, user-centered design, design for manufacturability and product interaction

  • Experience participating in research, design analysis and performing brand equity and visual asset audits

  • Compelling portfolio of pencil sketches, marker renderings and digital sketching. that efficiently present ideas in an elegant and compelling manner.

  • Computer literacy, including familiarity of Keynote, Apple Mac laptop; fluency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint
